The Cartuja de las Fuentes or Cartuja de Monegros is a former Carthusian monastery in the municipality of Sariñena not far from the border with the municipality of Lanaja in the Comarca of Monegros in the Spanish province of Huesca in Aragon .

history

The Charterhouse was founded in 1507 by the Counts of Sástago on the site of an old hermitage, but was moved to the Aula Dei Charterhouse near Saragossa in 1563 . The Carthusian Order resettled the settlement in 1589. The construction of the existing monastery, accompanied by difficulties and interruptions, began in 1717. Its buildings are built in the Baroque style; the church was richly painted between 1770 and 1780 with 250 frescoes by Manuel Bayeu. The monastery was abandoned in the liberal period between 1820 and 1823 and abolished in the disaster in Spain in 1836 and then passed into private hands.

During the civil war , part of the facility served as accommodation for the troops. At that time there was a field airfield in the immediate vicinity . This was created for the air forces of the Spanish Republic and after the conquest of the area in spring 1938 by Franco's troops, it was used by the Spanish nationalists. The two Bf 109 squadrons of Jagdgruppe 88 of the Condor Legion (1st and 2nd / JG88) were stationed here for a few weeks in March / April 1938. The tower of the monastery church was damaged in the crash of a landing German plane.

In 2002 the former monastery was placed under protection as Conjunto monumental ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).
