The Col du Pourtalet or Col de Portalet ( Spanish: Puerto de Portalet d'Aneu ) is a 1794 m high mountain pass in the Pyrenees . The pass is usually open all year round and is only closed for a few days after heavy snowfall.
Directions
- France
From Pau or Tarbes or Lourdes roads lead to Laruns ( 525 m ). From there it is just under 30 km on the D934 to the top of the pass.
- Spain
From Huesca or Jaca or Aínsa roads lead to Biescas ( 865 m ). From there it is about 27.6 km on the A136 to the top of the pass.
history
The Col du Pourtalet connects the Valle de Tena in the south with the Val d'Ossau in the north and has probably been used by people and their herds since the Neolithic Age . In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period it was celebrated by pilgrims .
Cycling
Because of its average gradient of only approx. 4.3% on the north side and 3.4% on the south side, the pass is popular with amateur cyclists.
