Microsoft Teams (abbreviated MS Teams or just Teams ) is a platform developed by Microsoft that combines chat, meetings, notes and attachments. The service is integrated into the Microsoft 365 suite with Microsoft Office and Skype / Skype for Business . Microsoft Teams Help and FAQ content is available in 37 languages. In addition, the software offers extensions that can be integrated into third-party products. Microsoft launched the service worldwide on March 14, 2017.

history

On March 4, 2016, it was announced that Microsoft was considering bidding $ 8 billion for Slack , but Bill Gates recommended focusing on improving Skype for Business . Qi Lu, Executive Vice President Applications and Services, pioneered the purchase of Slack but left Microsoft in the same year.

On November 2, 2016, Microsoft announced that it would publish MS Teams as a direct competitor to Slack. Slack ran a full-page ad in the New York Times acknowledging the competing service. Although Slack is used by 28 companies in the Fortune 100 group, The Verge wrote that the responsible decision-makers will question the service if MS Teams offers a similar feature in their company's existing Office 365 subscription at no additional cost. ZDNet reported that the companies were not competing for the same audience because at MS Teams, members outside of the organization couldn't join the platform and small businesses and freelancers were unlikely to switch. However, Microsoft planned to add this functionality. In response to Teams' announcement, Slack deepened its product integration with Google services.

On May 3, 2017, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Teams would replace the Microsoft Classroom in Office 365 Education (formerly known as Office 365 for Education ).

On September 7, 2017, after logging in to Skype for Business, some users saw the message that Skype for Business would become Microsoft Teams. The replacement of Skype for Business Online is planned for the end of July 2021. This was confirmed at Microsoft's annual Ignite conference on September 25, 2017.

On July 12, 2018, Microsoft announced a free version of Microsoft Teams, which offers most of the platform's communication options free of charge, but limits the number of users and storage capacity.

Since September 2017, external users can also be invited to collaborate in Microsoft Teams. A Microsoft account was required. In 2018, the platform was then also opened to external users without a Microsoft account. Microsoft Teams is still available to guest users with a limited range of functions.

On September 24, 2018, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Teams is the fastest growing business application in Microsoft history. In November 2019, 20 million daily active users were reached for the first time. This development was further intensified in March 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic . Within a week, the number of daily active users rose by more than 12 million to 44 million users.

Features

Teams

Teams can be created in Microsoft Teams to which people inside or outside the company can be invited. One or more channels are available in a team. Each channel consists of tabs. By default, there are the Posts and Files tabs . The File Locations tab files is the SharePoint Online organization. Other tabs for various purposes can be added. A team can contain up to 200 channels. Deleted channels are also counted towards this limit.

Messaging

Selected members can set up channels within a team. Channels are topics of conversation that allow team members to communicate without the use of email or group SMS. In addition to classic text messages, members can also reply to posts with images, GIFs, and custom memes . The use of GIFs and memes can be restricted or deactivated by administrators and team owners.

Direct messages allow members to send private messages to one or more people. Users can also talk to bots . A direct message is useful when a message is not relevant or particularly confidential for all members of a channel or team.

Connectors are third-party services that can send information to the Channel. Some connectors include MailChimp, Facebook Pages, Twitter, and Bing News.

Calling

MS Teams supports conferences in the public switched telephone network, with which users can call numbers from the client or conference participants can dial in using a number provided by Microsoft by specifying the conference ID.

meeting

Meetings can be planned or created ad hoc. Members of the channel can see that a meeting is in progress and join it. MS Teams also has a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook to invite others to a team meeting. The meetings can be recorded and later made available to other users on Microsoft Stream.

Bots

Microsoft Teams makes it possible to use different bots in daily collaboration. Useful bots are Polly for voting or who's as well as the Icebreaker Bot for searching for people in the company.

Teams for Education

Teams for Education enables administrators and teachers to set up special teams for classes, professional learning communities or employees.

Faculty has the ability to provide feedback through a dedicated tab available to Office 365 for Education subscribers and rate student assignments through teams assigned. Through the integration of Office Forms , tasks can also be assigned to students or pupils.

Slash commands

Many activities in Microsoft Teams can be controlled using shortcuts. People or information can be found more quickly, calls or chats can be started immediately and status updates can be made immediately.

Logs

MS-Teams is based on a number of Microsoft-specific protocols. The MNP24 protocol, known from the standard version of Skype , is used for video conferences . The MS-SIP protocol from Skype for Business is no longer used here for connecting the clients. Special gateways are required to connect standardized external video conference solutions and VoIP based on SIP and H.323.
