Nikolai Jakob Kleinenberg , also Nicolaus Kleinenberg ( Russian: Николаус Клейненберг ; * February 27th July / March 11th  1842 greg. In Libau ; † November 5, 1897 in Naples ) was a Russian zoologist .

Life

Nikolai was a member of a family from Nordhausen , which had lived in Courland since 1708 . His parents were the Libau city secretary Friedrich Kleinenberg and Charlotte Antonie, née Laurentz-Mester. He remained single.

He attended the secondary school in Libau from 1853 to 1860 and studied physics and medicine in Dorpat from 1861 to 1866 (suggestions from Schleiden and → C. Schmidt). From 1868 to 1871 he studied zoology and embryology with Ernst Haeckel in Jena (graduation as Dr. med.) Together with Anton Dohrn . From 1869 to 1870 he was his assistant and from 1872 to 1875 one of the closest collaborators of Dohrn, the founder of the zoological station in Naples , where he headed the laboratory until 1875. In the following two years he devoted himself to scientific studies and translations on Ischia . As a professor of zoology and comparative anatomy, he worked from 1878 to 1895 at the University of Messina , and continued his work in the same position from 1895 to 1897 at the University of Palermo .

The 1876 publication by Francis Maitland Balfour on the development of sharks was followed by a highly regarded critical work.
