Arnold Hasselblatt (historian)

Arnold Hasselblatt (born March 4, 1852 in Camby , † November 8, 1927 in Dorpat ) was a Livonian historian and journalist .

Life

Arnold Christian Theodor Hasselblatt was born as the son of the pastor and provost of the Camby parish, Carl Jacob Eduard Hasselblatt (1820–1889), and Marianne Luise Karoline Luther (1823–1903).

He attended grammar school from 1862 to 1869 and studied history in Dorpat from 1870 to 1872 and 1874 to 1875 . He then attended the lectures of Georg Waitz in Göttingen . In Göttingen he was also President of the Göttingen Historical Society. Back in Dorpat in 1876 he was initially an employee, in 1878 second and finally in 1888 sole editor in charge of the Neue Dörptschen Zeitung . He stayed in this position until 1914 and became a correspondent for the Rigaer Tageblatt and the Rigaer Zeitung the following year . From 1918 to 1920 Hasselblatt was editor-in-chief of the Dorpater Zeitung and from 1920 to 1926 city archivist and correspondent for several newspapers.

From 1876 to 1885 Hasselblatt was also a librarian. From 1885 to 1897 he was secretary, from 1919 to 1920 president and from 1923 honorary member of the Estonian learned society . Hasselblatt was also an honorary member of the Society for History and Archeology in Riga and, since 1925, of the Archeology Society in Pernau. He was also President of the Dorpater Men's Choir and President from 1882 to 1921, later Honorary President of the Dorpater Chess Club. He was also an honorary member of the Revaler Liedertafel and finally, since 1892, a corresponding member of the Estonian Literary Society .

Hasselblatt married Anna Vierck (1853–1933) on June 19, 1879 in Dorpat. The marriage produced five sons and two daughters:
