The so-called casino , also Círculo Oscense , in Huesca , the capital of the province of the same name in the Spanish autonomous region of Aragón , was built between 1901 and 1904 by the Catalan architect Ildefonso Bonells . The building is considered one of the most important buildings of modernism in Aragón. Inside, the original furniture and decor have largely been preserved. In 2007 the building was declared a monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

history

The building was originally built as the seat of the Liberal Democratic Party ( Partido Liberal Demócrata ) and the Círculo Oscense club, which was founded in 1877 on the model of a casino company . The rooms were used for parties and receptions, exhibitions and carnival events took place, lectures, language courses and readings were also held. There were rooms for games, for chess , billiards and games of chance , hence the name casino .

Under the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera from 1923 to 1930, the casino lost its income due to the closure of the gambling halls. During the Second Spanish Republic it was used as a cultural center ( Casa de la Cultura ). During the Spanish Civil War , it served as a military hospital, which operated until 1953. In 1951 the city administration took over the casino and rented it out to various clubs. In 1955 a public library was established.

Today the casino is run by a foundation, the Fundación Círculo Oscense, which was founded in 1982. In the 1980s, the building was completely renovated.

The facade is decorated with modernist and historic decor. The interior paintings were made by Pascual Aventín, the carvings by Francisco Arnal.
