Valerius of Saragossa , also Valero (* in Valencia , Spain, † 315 in Enate , Aragon ) was Bishop of Saragossa (Caesar Augustana)

Live and act

Prudentius suggests a descent from the Roman family of the Valerians . Valerius participated in the Synod of Elvira near Granada (uncertain, between 300 and 324). Datianus , the governor of the province of Tarraconensis , had him arrested in 304 at the same time as his archdeacon Vincent and brought to Valencia, where Vincenz suffered martyrdom.

Valerius was exiled to Enate, where he died without being able to return to his bishopric after the Edict of Tolerance of 313. He was buried in the Estada Church .

reception

On October 20, 1065, his relics were brought to Roda de Isábena by Bishop Arnulf of Estada after they were found . In 1170 King Alfonso II was able to acquire the head relic for Saragossa, whose patron is the saint. Alfonso I had already received an arm relic for Saragossa in 1121 after he had recaptured the city in 1118. In 1397 Petrus de Luna had a silver bust reliquary made in Avignon, which is now kept in the treasury of the Cathedral of Saragossa.

The oldest news about Valerius can be found in the Passio Vincentii I from the 5th century, while the Legenda Valerii I was only recorded in the 12th century based on an older model.

The feast of the saint is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church on January 29th .
