Pietro Piovani

Pietro Piovani (born October 17, 1922 in Naples ; † August 13, 1980 there ) was an Italian philosopher.

Piovani completed his studies in 1947 at the University of Naples with Giuseppe Capograssi. Between 1953 and 1963 he taught at the universities of Trieste , Florence and Rome . From 1963 until his death in 1980 he held the chair of moral philosophy at the University of Naples.

Piovani mainly dealt with issues of legal, moral and social philosophy. His best-known books include studies on the natural law debate and modern ethics ( Giusnaturalismo ed etica moderna , Bari 1961; 2nd edition Napoli 2000), on the relationship between philosophy and the history of ideas ( Filosofia e storia delle idee , Bari 1965; 2nd edition Roma 2010 ) as well as historical knowledge and moral awareness ( Conoscenza storica e coscienza morale , Napoli 1966; 2nd edition, ibid. 1972). As a historian of philosophy, he has also presented studies on Plato , Vico and Hegel , among others . He was a member of several scientific academies such as the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome and the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples. He also founded the Vico Research Center ("Centro di Studi Vichiani", CNR), which is based at the University of Naples and publishes the critical edition of Vico's works.

His estate and library are now looked after by a foundation, the "Fondazione Pietro Piovani per gli studi vichiani", which has its own series of publications to publish his works and discuss their significance. As part of this series, a bibliography of secondary literature, edited by Paolo Amodio, was published, which documents Piovani's impact on Italian intellectual life. An edition "Selected Works by Pietro Piovani in German Translation" is currently in preparation.
