Menhirs by Muro Leccese
The menhirs of Muro Leccese are located near Muro Leccese in the province of Lecce in the Salent region in Apulia in Italy .
Five prehistoric menhirs have been preserved in the area around Muro Leccese :
- The angular menhir "Crocefisso" stands near the Church of Crocefisso (Crucifixion Church) and has been preserved up to a height of 1.4 m. Two cross graffiti were placed on its north side. It stands in a monolithic base. Location: 40 ° 6 ′ 39 ″ N, 18 ° 20 ′ 13 ″ E
- The menhir "Giallini" is only about 1.30 m high and has a cross graffiti on the north side. Location: 40 ° 6 ′ 28 ″ N, 18 ° 20 ′ 10 ″ E
- The approximately 2.0 m high menhir "Miggiano" stands near the church of Santa Maria di Miggiano. Location: 40 ° 5 ′ 41 ″ N, 18 ° 19 ′ 37 ″ E
- The 4.3 m high menhir "Largo Trice" is one of the larger, and stands in the square of the same name near the church of Santa Marina, which is visited for its beautiful medieval paintings. Location: 40 ° 5 ′ 52 ″ N, 18 ° 20 ′ 23 ″ E
- In the neighboring town of Sanarica stands the 4.2 m high needle-like menhir "Croce", framed with a modern base, by the church of Croce di Sant 'Antonio. Location: 40 ° 5 ′ 57 ″ N, 18 ° 21 ′ 13 ″ E
Many tall, slender menhirs have been preserved in Puglia, some in combination with dolmens and specchie , but today they are mostly isolated. They are pegged into a socket or base. They are irregular and regular square pillars up to five meters high, which in some cases are decorated in the lower area with a graffito or relief (usually a cross).
