Ceglie Messapica is a municipality in Apulia .
geography
The community has 19,501 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Brindisi on the east coast of Italy , 35 km west of the city of Brindisi . Ceglie is located on a hill about 300 meters high.
The neighboring communities are Francavilla Fontana , Martina Franca ( TA ), Ostuni , San Michele Salentino , Villa Castelli .

prehistory
Archaeological finds indicate that the district of the municipality was settled 4000 years ago. “Kailia” became an important military and economic center for the Messapiers . Later the area came under Roman rule. The finds from numerous excavations are now in the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto and in private collections.

Attractions
The Specchia Miano (a tumulus ) has a diameter of 20 and a height of 11 meters, making it one of the largest in Apulia.
The “Castello Ducale”, the town's landmark and depicted in its coat of arms, was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The “Chiesa Collegiata” with an associated monastery in the Baroque style also dates from this period .
The feast of San Antonio takes place on June 13th, the feast of Santa Anna on July 26th and the feast of San Rocco on August 16th.

economy
The city is suffering from the collapse of the manufacturing industry in neighboring Brindisi and Taranto. The textile industry is flourishing. Agriculture, especially olive growing and viticulture, still play a major role.
The growing tourism is waiting for its further development: some "masserie" (farms) as well as "trulli" in the rural area of Ceglie have been restored, expanded and offered as holiday accommodation. Most of the visitors come from Northern Italy and Great Britain . Gastronomy is flourishing.
Sports
In August, the annual international cycle race Coppa Messapica takes place in the city center .
In basketball, the Cegliesi are very well represented by the Basket Ceglie Club . The Ultrasceglie fan group ensures a good atmosphere at home games. The local soccer team plays in the third division.
