Palagiano is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Taranto in Apulia .
geography
The community has 15,954 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It extends from the Gulf of Taranto a few kilometers north into the Murgia . Palagiano is about 18 kilometers northwest of Taranto . The Lato and Lenne rivers flow through the municipality .
history
At the turn of the first millennium, Palagiano was fortified and besieged several times. The place was in the domain of the Ottonians , later in the Kingdom of Naples .
traffic
The A14 autostrada , which runs from Bologna to Taranto, runs through the municipality . Further, the traverse Strada Statale 7 and Strada Statale 106 the municipality.
The station Palagiano-Mottola on the railway line Bari-Taranto the community shares with the neighboring town of Mottola . The district of Chiatona, located directly on the Gulf of Taranto, has another train station on the Taranto – Reggio di Calabria railway line .
