The Bari – Taranto railway is a railway line operated by the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) in Apulia .

Route description

The line is 114.5 km long, electrified and double- tracked except for the section between Bari and the Bitetto - Palo del Colle train station (14.9 km) .

The most striking engineering structure on the route is the Castellaneta railway bridge over the Gravina Grande di Castellaneta , a gorge southeast of the town of Castellaneta .

history

The route was licensed to Count Pietro Bastogi by Law No. 763 of August 21, 1862 . It was built by the Strade Ferrate Meridiolani . It was opened in two stages: on June 1, 1865 from Bari to Gioia del Colle ; from September 15, 1868, it was continuously passable. When the major railway companies in Italy were nationalized in 1905 and combined in the FS, this also included the Bari – Taranto line.

Since 1991 the FS has been planning to expand its capacity. Although the line was electrified in the meantime, it was still single-track and the route with its tight curves and flat inclines was largely at the same level as in the second half of the 19th century. It was therefore largely expanded to double-track, section by section, and shortened by 12.3 km. The upgraded line went into operation in 1997.

Planning

Between the Modugno Cittá stop and the Bitetto-Palo del Colle train station , the route is to be straightened, removing the former Modugno passenger train station , which is only used as a service station .
