Leoporano is a southern Italian city with 8093 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Apulia in the province of Taranto .
Geographical location
The port city of Leporano is located on the southeastern Salento peninsula , about 12 km from Taranto and about 440 km from Rome . The city's coat of arms represents a red rabbit on a blue shield, which is surrounded on the underside by a green laurel wreath and overlooked by a count's crown.
history
The city's historical records point to a Hellenistic settlement from the 4th century BC. BC, which in turn is confirmed by some artifacts that come from the local archaeological sites.
Attractions
Leporano is, among other things, for the "Castello Muscettola" located in the city center, a medieval fortress, the impressive watchtower of Saturo, which is visible from afar, which should offer protection from the increasing piracy of the 15th century, and the small port "Pirrone" (also Porto Perone ), which is mainly appreciated by yacht owners and sailors. At the watchtower of Saturo ( Torre Saturo ) remains of the late 8th century BC were found. Founded ancient Greek colony Satyrion as well as an indigenous predecessor settlement whose beginnings go back to the beginning of the middle Italian Bronze Age (approx. 17th century BC). Another attraction is the historical archaeological site of a magnificent Roman villa.
