Leon Wieseltier (born June 14, 1952 in Brooklyn ) is an American journalist .

Life

Wieseltier attended the yeshiva in Flatbush , where he received a Zionist education. He studied at Columbia University , Oxford University and Harvard University , from 1979 to 1982 he was a member of Harvard's Society of Fellows .

Wieseltier wrote poetry and non-fiction books. His book Kaddish received particular public attention in 2000 and became a finalist at the National Book Award . He posthumously edited essays by Lionel Trilling and translated poetry by Yehuda Amichai into English, which he had published in The New Republic and The New Yorker . Wieseltier had been a member of The New Republic's editorial team since 1979 and became its literary editor in 1983 . In 2014 he left the magazine. His high-profile articles sparked more debates among the American and Israeli public. In 2010 he co-founded the Jewish Review of Books . In 2013 he received the Dan David Prize together with Michel Serres .

Wieseltier was the companion of choreographer Twyla Tharp for four years .
