DFB Cup semi-finals 1984

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The semifinals of the DFB Cup competition 1983/84 went down in the history of German football because of the unusual game processes and results. Had qualified from the Bundesliga of Bayern Munich , Werder Bremen and Borussia Moenchengladbach . With FC Schalke 04 , a second division team also reached the round of the last four. The draw resulted in the following matches:

  • Borussia Mönchengladbach - Werder Bremen
  • FC Schalke 04 - FC Bayern Munich

It was the first two semi-finals of the DFB Cup that were broadcast live on German television. A total of 26 goals fell in these two games on May 1 and 2, 1984, both of which went into extra time, as well as a replay a week later, before the finalists were determined. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the 2009 encounters, Welt Online wrote of the “two most spectacular cup games of all time”.

First semi-final game Borussia Mönchengladbach - Werder Bremen

In the first semi-final game, fourth in the table, Borussia, and fifth in the current Bundesliga table, Werder Bremen, met in Mönchengladbach's Bökelberg Stadium . First of all, a balanced game developed in front of 34,500 spectators at the sold-out Bökelberg, in the course of which more and more Borussia took the initiative. Defender Rigobert Gruber from Bremen suffered a serious knee injury early on, but continued to play for a few minutes before he had to be replaced in the 17th minute. A few moments earlier he was able to clear a shot from Wilfried Hannes to the corner . Ultimately, the injury meant the end of Gruber's career as a professional footballer. Five minutes before half-time Mönchengladbach took the lead through Lothar Matthäus , just two minutes later Norbert Meier equalized , and two minutes later Norbert Ringels increased Borussia's 2-1 half-time lead. The team was able to increase the lead to 3: 1 in the 76th minute of the game. Within six minutes, the Bremen team transformed this deficit into a 4-3 lead, which they were able to hold into stoppage time ; A goal for Mönchengladbach by Wilfried Hannes in the 88th minute was not recognized by referee Franz-Josef Hontheim . In the 82nd minute, Gladbach's coach Jupp Heynckes came on for striker Hans-Jörg Criens , who equalized 4: 4 in the fifth minute of stoppage time. There was an extension of 2 × 15 minutes. Both teams had several chances to score goals. The goal to 5: 4, and thus to the decision, succeeded Criens again in the 107th minute. Gladbach had to play in the last few minutes after striker Uwe Rahn broke his nose and Borussia had already run out of substitutes.

Special occurrences

In the middle of the second half there was unrest in the ranks of the Bremen fan block, which was behind the goal of Gladbach's goalkeeper Ulrich Sude . During the game, an object was thrown onto the field and smoke was escaping from it. At first it was thought to be a smoke bomb, but when the players Wolfgang Sidka and Uwe Rahn collapsed and goalkeeper Sude was also contaminated by the smoke, the game had to be interrupted for a few minutes. On the pitch there were scuffles between players and supervisors of both teams; The trigger was a bump by Michael Frontzeck against Bremen's trainer Otto Rehhagel , who rushed onto the pitch, worried about Sidka. Referee Hontheim was able to calm the situation. Meanwhile, the smoke, which turned out to be tear gas , also affected spectators. The police marched on the Bremen block and arrested some people. After the end of the game, Bremen's manager Willi Lemke protested against the game's rating, which he withdrew for sporting reasons, as both teams were affected by the incident.

The match between Mönchengladbach and Bremen was considered to be the debut of the “ jokerHans-Jörg Criens , who from then on scored decisive or important goals several times as a substitute shortly before the game.

Second semi-final game Schalke 04 - Bayern Munich

On May 2, 1984 in Gelsenkirchen, the second place in the 2nd Bundesliga Schalke 04, described by some as a "blatant outsider", and Bayern Munich, second in the Bundesliga, met. In the full Park Stadium in Gelsenkirchen - officially there were 70,600 spectators, unofficially it should have been 78,000 - the Munich team was able to play out a 2-0 lead relatively quickly. The live broadcast of the match began on ZDF at 8:15 p.m. after a quarter of an hour of playing time. But Schalke equalized a short time later; it developed "the most dramatic cup game in the history of the competition, which has been held since 1935". Bayern took the lead again, Schalke was able to equalize again. Schalke then took the lead 4: 3. The Bavarians managed to equalize again and it was extended to 4: 4. In the 112th minute, the Schalke keeper Walter Junghans made a mistake that Dieter Hoeneß used to make it 5: 4 for Bayern. This was followed by the Schalke equalizer and two minutes before the end, the Munich team made it 6: 5. With the last attack, in overtime stoppage time, Olaf Thon scored his third goal in the game and thus produced the final score of 6: 6. This forced the second division team to play again, as the statutes of the DFB did not provide for a penalty shoot-out for cup games in the event of a tie despite extra time. The replay on May 9, 1984 in Munich in front of 40,000 spectators ended with a 3-2 in regular time for Bayern. The goals for Munich were scored twice by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Dieter Hoeneß, while Michael Jakobs and Michael Opitz on Schalke's side . In the game, Schalke were able to make up a 2-0 deficit before Rummenigge scored the winning goal in the 79th minute.

Special occurrences

Olaf Thon , who turned 18 the day before the first game and was still a senior in the Schalke ranks, scored three goals in this game. Bayern coach Udo Lattek remarked after the game that he would take Thon with him to Munich immediately if he had ten million Deutschmarks available. Almost half a year later, Olaf Thon was appointed to the German senior national team and played his first international match against Malta . In 1988 Thon actually moved to Bayern Munich and played there for six years before returning to Schalke.

reporting

The first encounter was broadcast live by ZDF , commented by Eberhard Figgemeier . The reporter still praised 20 years later: “An incredible game. You can't imagine football more beautiful. "

Manfred Breuckmann commented for the radio .
