Thomas Kruse (born September 7, 1959 in Recklinghausen ) is a former German soccer player . He played 199 Bundesliga games for FC Schalke 04 .

Career as a player

Kruse moved from the youth of SC Recklinghausen to the youth of FC Schalke 04 in 1975 . In 1976 he and his team became German A-Youth Champions . In 1978 he finally made the leap into the professional team. He played his first Bundesliga game on September 2, 1978 against Borussia Mönchengladbach . In his first season he made 25 appearances and became a regular player. He scored the first two of his only three Bundesliga goals in a 2-0 win over Hertha BSC on matchday three of the 1979/80 season . In 1981, 1983 and 1988 he was relegated to the second division with Schalke , and in 1982 and 1984 he was immediately promoted again. After the third relegation in 1988 and the previous sorting out by coach Horst Franz , Kruse left Gelsenkirchen . He first played a year at FC Remscheid in the Oberliga Nordrhein and then let his career end at DSC Wanne-Eickel . Today Kruse is still active in the traditional team of FC Schalke.

In total, Kruse played 199 Bundesliga games (3 goals), 63 second division games (3 goals) and seven games in the DFB Cup . He also had some appearances in youth selections and the German B national team.

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Kruse first made the coach A license and as coach led the clubs Blau Weiß Post Recklinghausen and FC Eintracht Rheine in the top league . In Rheine he was the successor to Ernst Middendorp . Then he trained the Schalke C youth and worked in Ingo Anderbrügge's football school . Later he took over his hometown club FC 96 Recklinghausen until 2008 and rose with him to the association league .
