Reinhold Mathy (born April 12, 1962 in Memmingen ) is a former German soccer player who played in the Bundesliga for FC Bayern Munich and Bayer 05 Uerdingen .

Career

Mathy began playing soccer at FC Memmingen , the soccer club in his birthplace in the administrative district of Swabia , before moving to the youth department of FC Bayern Munich at the age of 17.

For the 1980/81 season he moved up to the professional squad, in which he played 100 Bundesliga games in seven seasons and scored 21 goals. He made his debut on October 18, 1980 (10th matchday) in a 3-1 win at home against VfL Bochum with a substitution in the 83rd minute for Norbert Janzon . He scored his first Bundesliga goal on April 11, 1981 (28th matchday) in the home game against MSV Duisburg with the goal to make it 5-1 in the 76th minute.

Furthermore, he played 15 times in the DFB Cup competition (including the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1984 and against VfB Stuttgart in 1986 ) in which he scored five goals, and 14 times in the European Cup competitions in which he scored six goals. Highlights were the finals in 1982 to the European Champions Cup , which against Aston Villa 0: was lost 1, the second round -Hinspiel on 23 October 1985 , in which he at the 4: 2 victory over FK Austria Wien in the Olympic Stadium Munich three goals scored and the first round first leg in 1986 , in which he scored both goals for a 2-0 win at Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven .

For the 1987/88 season Mathy moved to league rivals Bayer 05 Uerdingen and was used by the 1989/90 season 78 times in the league and nine times in the DFB Cup for the "factory club". His career ended after only eleven appearances - due to numerous injuries - in the 2nd Bundesliga at Hannover 96 on May 25, 1993 (44th matchday) in a 2-1 win in the away game against FC 08 Homburg with a substitution for Hakan Bicici in the 46th minute.

National team

For the U-18 national team , Mathy was used six times (without scoring). He made his debut on November 28, 1979 in Luxembourg in a 5-1 win against the selection of the host; his last game he played on May 20, 1980 in Braunsbedra in the 0-1 defeat against the selection of Romania.

In 1982 he was appointed to the U-21 national team for the first time , for which he scored six goals in seven international matches . On his debut in this age group, he scored his first international goal on March 23 in Schwenningen in a 1-1 draw in the friendly against Switzerland . 1983 followed against the selections of Portugal (3: 1; on February 22 in Setúbal - 1 goal), Albania (1: 1; on March 29 in Shkodra - 1 goal), Hungary (0: 0; on September 6 in Gyöngyös ), Austria (2: 1; on October 4 in Arnsberg ), and Turkey (7: 0; on October 25 in Berlin - 2 goals) five more appearances (including three European Championship qualifiers ) in this age group.
