Rigobert Gruber

Rigobert Gruber (born May 14, 1961 in Worms ) is a former German football player .

Career

The seven-time youth national player - he made his debut in the DFB youth team on September 27, 1977 at the international match against Finland alongside teammates Bernd Dierßen , Bernd Gorski and Pierre Littbarski - came from the youth team at Blau-Weiß Worms, and followed up from there in 1978 Frankfurt and played for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga since the 1979/80 season, when he was 18 at the time . In the first year he came on twelve Bundesliga appearances and was used once in the UEFA competition on November 28, 1979 in the 4-1 home win against Feyenoord Rotterdam as a substitute. After he had only made nine more Bundesliga appearances at Eintracht in 1980/81 - he was substituted on in the DFB Cup in 1981 in the games against SSV Ulm and VfB Oldenburg - the three-time junior national player from 1979 and 1980 took the offer of the Bundesliga returnee Werder Bremen and moved to the 1981/82 round to coach Otto Rehhagel's team .

In 1982 the talented Vorstopper finished fifth in the Bundesliga with the Bremen promoted team. At the side of the veteran Klaus Fichtel , he completed all 34 league games and scored eight goals. In his second year in Bremen, 1982/83, the green-whites ended up tied with champions Hamburger SV in second place. In the third Werder season, 1983/84, he came to the side of Bruno Pezzey to 27 league games and Werder landed in fifth place.

Under Rehhagel, the defender was part of the regular staff and was able to play close to the national team thanks to consistently good performances. However, he was denied an appeal. In the DFB U-21 team, Gruber made a total of seven international matches from 1979 to 1982. In 1984 Gruber suffered a serious knee injury. He completed his last Bundesliga game on April 27, 1984 in a 3-0 home win against Arminia Bielefeld. He tried to make a comeback in vain until 1986 and had to file an application for sports disability .

Gruber played a total of 110 Bundesliga games in which he scored 13 goals.
