history

The East Texas Hillbilly Jamboree was first broadcast from Longview on the evening of December 8, 1953. On average, a show lasted two hours, one of which was broadcast live on the radio via KFRO. The first show was held at the Rita Theater with guest star Claude Gray and the Road Runners. WS Samuels, who ran the East Texas Hillbilly Jamboree Artist Bureau, acted as the “ A&R Manager” of the Jamboree. Sammy Lillibridge, a KFRO employee, directed the show.

Most of the musicians on the show came from Texas. DJ Lee Rose was a long-time member, as were Bob Shelton and Mike Post. In addition, stars like Red Sovine , Johnny Horton and Billy Walker regularly made guest appearances. Billboard reported several times in its editions that the East Texas Hillbilly Jamboree was very popular.

In the summer of 1954, the Sammy Lillibridge show was closed, but was broadcast live again in the fall. In 1955, Tommy Bell booked the show for a few weekend appearances.
