Rhenish derby

The term Rheinisches Derby refers to a meeting between two sports clubs based in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Rhineland .

Soccer

In the first and second Bundesliga , the following matches are part of the Rhenish derbies :

• Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FC Köln, played 62 times in the first Bundesliga between 1979 and 2018
• 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach , between 1965 and 2018 88 times in the first and second Bundesliga
• Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Köln, between 1966 and 2020, 52 times in the first and second Bundesliga
• MSV Duisburg and Fortuna Düsseldorf, between 1966 and 2018 42 times in the first and second Bundesliga (commonly known as "tram derby" because of the direct connection between both cities by the Rheinbahn )
• Fortuna Düsseldorf versus Borussia Mönchengladbach, between 1966 and 2020 50 times in the first Bundesliga

In the context of these games, there are often major police operations and tightened security measures due to the clash of rival fan groups.

In the German Ice Hockey League , the games of

• Düsseldorfer EG and Kölner Haie
• Düsseldorfer EG and Krefeld Pinguine (also: "Tram Derby")
• Krefeld penguins and Cologne sharks

as a Rheinisches Derby .

basketball

In the basketball league , the match between Telekom Baskets Bonn and Düsseldorf Baskets was referred to as the Rheinisches Derby .
