With 192 matches since 1901, the Franconian-Bavarian Derby - also known as Bayernderby or Südderby - is the third most popular football derby in Germany after the Frankenderby and the Munich Derby . Sometimes games between other Franconian and Bavarian teams, such as between SpVgg Fürth and TSV 1860 Munich , are referred to as Franconian-Bavarian Derby.
Overall, the match was recorded 192 times (65 FCN victories, 37 draws, 90 FCB victories) in statistics (as of January 12, 2020), but often without sources for the result, but only for the winner or loser.

backgrounds
The soccer clubs 1. FC Nürnberg and FC Bayern Munich were founded in 1900, and despite the 180 km distance, a great rivalry quickly developed, as the teams represent both the two largest Bavarian cities and are also the most successful clubs from Bavaria . In addition, the formerly free imperial city of Nuremberg , which was incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806 , does not belong to old Bavaria , but to the culturally independent region of Franconia and the meeting thus represents the character of a struggle for independence for the Nuremberg people. In addition, the milieus of the two clubs, the club as an association of a traditional workers' and merchant town, the Bavarians as a team founded and shaped by wealthy academics, oppose each other. Furthermore, was the first FC Nuremberg with nine championships and three cup victories both to 1987 over 64 years German record champions , and to 1969 for 34 years German record cup winner before he was replaced respectively by Bayern.
Beginnings
Both clubs met for the first time in 1901 in a friendly game for the "Bavarian Championship", which Bayern won 6-0. The Bavarians, soon also known as “cavaliers” or “protzenklub” due to their elite founders and teammates, asked before this first meeting, “Well, how much do you think we’re going to do it?” And had an arrogant 15: 0 typed. The club achieved their first victory in 1906 with a 4-3. From 1907 both clubs met regularly in the South German soccer championship .
Nuremberg dominance
In the 1920s, the FCN won five German championship titles and, together with the neighbor from Fürth, was considered the team of the hour. So the derby against Bayern fell into the background compared to the Frankenderby . In January 1925, the comparison with 17 club and 15 Bavarian victories in 35 played games looked reasonably balanced. In the following years, however, the FCN won more and more games and dominated the leagues. An exception is the 1932 season, in which Bayern won a championship title for the first and only time before the Bundesliga was founded. The balance sheet after the end of the Second World War therefore sees the club clearly ahead with 37 wins from 20 defeats and eleven draws from 68 matches. Furthermore, at this point in time there are six championships and two cup victories for the Nuremberg team against a championship title for Bayern.
In the post-war years, they met regularly in the Oberliga Süd until the Bundesliga was founded in 1963 . Here, too, the Nuremberg team dominated the event and won the derby 17 times. Bayern, however, only won eight of the 34 clashes. In April 1955, with a 6-1 win for FCN, Bayern's first descent into the second division was clear. After the immediate resurgence and winning the DFB Cup in 1957, Bayern were about to qualify for the Bundesliga. However, since local rivals 1860 Munich became champions in the 1962/63 season, the DFB awarded the Munich Bundesliga starting place to the 1860s. Bayern actually ranked in the decisive twelve-year ranking before 1860 Munich, but could not start in the Bundesliga despite protests. FC Nürnberg was a founding member of the Bundesliga, and FC Bayern also played in it from 1965/66. After the decision to win the ninth championship title in 1968 in the 2-0 away game against Bayern in the Grünwalder Stadium , the 10,000 club fans who had traveled spontaneously stormed the pitch.
The rise of Bavaria
In the 1968/69 season Bayern were able to win their first Bundesliga title, while in the same season the club was relegated to a nine-year second division as the first and only reigning German champions. Since then he has been commuting regularly between the first and second division. Bayern, on the other hand, overtook FCN in 1987 after more than 64 years of German record championship with their 10th championship title and since then have been German champions 28 times and German cup winners 18 times. The last time the club was able to place itself in front of FCB in the 1991/92 season, when they narrowly failed to qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Controversial referee decisions
Referee decisions were repeatedly discussed controversially after the two teams met. The club was at break in the 1982 DFB Cup final , 2-0 up despite a failed penalty. In the 72nd minute, when the score was 2: 2, the referee made a wrong decision with a penalty whistle, which ultimately led to the game in Bayern's favor.
Also in September 1985, the referee Rainer Jupe decided after a clear shot on the line for Bayern and left the FCB goalkeeper running too early with a penalty for the club unpunished. Rainer Jupe was then suspended by the DFB for two months and the then DFB treasurer Egidius Braun also stated that Nuremberg had been clearly disadvantaged. The long-time Nuremberg trainer Heinz Höher summarized the irregularities in the games against Bayern as follows: “If we are better, Bayern win. If it's even, Bayern win. And if Bayern are better, they'll win anyway. "
In the relegation battle in 1994, the club only needed one point to secure relegation early. In the Munich Olympic Stadium, Bremen referee Hans-Jürgen Osmers decided to score in the 21st minute, although Thomas Helmer's shot was proven to have missed the goal. This situation went down in Bundesliga history as a phantom goal . In the end, Munich won the game 2-1, but after protests had to play a replay, in which they were able to prevail with 5-0. The FCN thus rose again in a championship season of Bayern.
In September 2005 Bayern were able to win 2-1 against the club after an irregular hit from an offside position. The then FCN coach Wolfgang Wolf then said: “The referees have their pants full when it comes to Bayern. I wish I had more courage from you, without worrying that Hoeness would scold you outside. "
Recent past
In the last few matches Bayern were able to prevail, so the balance sheet since 2006 shows 16 clashes, eleven successes for Bayern with only one club win. The last time FCN was able to win in the 2006/07 cup winners season on February 2, 2007, when Ottmar Hitzfeld started over as Bayern coach , scored 3-0 in the home stadium . After four years of second-rate status and the resurgence of 1. FC Nürnberg 2018 , there was a meeting for the first time in the 2018/19 season . FC Bayern prevailed 3-0 in the first leg in front of their home crowd, the second leg took place in April in Nuremberg as planned and ended 1-1. During the winter break of the 2019/20 season, there was a test match in Nuremberg on January 11, 2020. In the Max Morlock Stadium , the club defeated Bayern 5-2. Despite meanwhile 90 Bayern wins, compared to 65 club successes, the FCN still leads in goal difference with 337 to 323 goals.
Overview of the games
1900 to 1945
Since there is not information about the date, result, venue and winners of the respective game for all games up to 1945, all known information about clashes during this period is kept in a table. What is certain, however, is that by the start of the 1945/46 season there were 67 Franconian-Bavarian clashes, of which FC Nürnberg won 36 games and FC Bayern won 20 games. The eleven other matches ended in a draw.
- Under game day / round , canceled games (mostly due to weather conditions) are not classified under the originally planned game day, but rather close to the game day that was closest to the date of the catch-up game. - The numbers in brackets under the result indicate the half-time result. "N. E. ”means“ after penalty shoot-out ”,“ n. V. "means" after extension ".
