Munich city derby
Football games between the two most successful football clubs in Munich , FC Bayern and TSV 1860 , are known as the Munich City Derby . Also known as the Munich Derby or Munich Local Derby , with 204 matches since 1902, it is the second most popular football derby in Germany after the Frankenderby .
history
The early years (1902–1933)
The soccer department of TSV 1860 Munich was founded in April 1899, the FC Bayern as an independent club in February 1900 after the MTV Munich had rejected the club's entry into the South German Football Association . The first derby between the two clubs was played in September 1902, which FC Bayern won 3-0. In the following years, too, Bayern were mostly superior. At the beginning of the 1930s, both clubs had their first successes: The Lions reached the final of the German championship in 1931 (which they lost to Hertha BSC ), and a year later FC Bayern triumphed against Eintracht Frankfurt . At the victory celebration in Munich's Löwenbräukeller , one of the keynote speeches said: "What people thought in 1860 last year, FC Bayern has done this year" .
Period of National Socialism (1933–1945)
The seizure of power by the National Socialists also had an impact on the two Munich clubs: Jewish members had to leave the clubs, which hit Bayern particularly hard. The most prominent case was long-time President Kurt Landauer , who had to give up his office in March 1933. Although Bayern announced the exclusion of all Jewish members in the Stuttgart Declaration in April 1933, together with 13 other southern German football clubs, and implemented an Aryan paragraph in the club's statutes in 1935 , it was frowned upon as a "Jewish club". The Munich Lions , on the other hand, showed a clear affinity for the rising National Socialism even before 1933 and implemented the leader principle in a general meeting of the gymnastics club in September 1933 . Through good relations with the NSDAP the association was able to save itself from bankruptcy in the thirties. In the newly formed Gauliga Bayern , TSV 1860 was the more successful club. The Tschammer Cup was won in 1942 , and a year later the Lions reached the quarter-finals of the final round of the German Championship.

After the end of the war , football again enjoyed great popularity. With the exception of the Palatinate and the district of Lindau, Bavaria belonged to the American zone of occupation , so the restoration of gaming operations was the responsibility of the US military government . Since no all-German championship was allowed to be played at this time, the Oberliga Süd was founded in 1945 as the first football league in Germany on the soil of the American occupation zone . Both clubs belonged to her almost continuously. Since other Munich clubs such. For example, when FC Wacker Munich sank into insignificance, the rivalry between the two remaining Munich clubs increased. Overall, however, the successes remained modest; only in 1957 was FC Bayern able to win a national title with the DFB Cup.
Struggle for supremacy (1963-1970)
In the run-up to the newly introduced Bundesliga , there were some disagreements between the clubs. Although FC Bayern was ahead of their city rivals in the twelve-year ranking that was decisive for the composition of the new league , they were refused entry. An urgency request to increase the league was also rejected by the DFB . While TSV 1860 received a license, FC Bayern remained in the Oberliga Süd , as, at the request of the DFB, only one club per city should take part in the first Bundesliga season and Bayern lacked a "sporting past".
In the spring of 1964 there was a fateful story about a single player: After good performances at TSV Nördlingen, the Munich clubs became aware of the future world champion and Bundesliga record shooter Gerd Müller . Walter Fembeck , managing director of FC Bayern Munich , appeared just an hour before the colleague from the sixties at the Müller's home to offer him a contract. Müller, who figured he had little chance of getting a regular place at TSV 1860, finally gave Bayern the contract.
TSV 1860 won the DFB Cup in the first Bundesliga season and reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup the following year , which was lost 2-0 to West Ham United . In 1966 Munich finally became Germany's football metropolis: while the Lions won the championship, Bavaria won the DFB Cup . The first Bundesliga sport took place on the first day of the season. The TSV 1860 decided this for itself. From the following year, the situation turned: While TSV landed in second place, Bayern was able to defend the DFB Cup and won the Isar's first international title with the European Cup Winners' Cup . Two years later, FC Bayern scored their first double , while in 1860 they only finished 10th in the Bundesliga and had to be relegated the following season.
Bavaria's glorious years, 1860 crashes (1970–1982)
After TSV was relegated to the second division in 1860, the balance of power shifted completely in favor of Bayern. The glorious years of FC Bayern began with the completion of the Olympic Stadium : three championships (1972–1974) were followed by three titles in the European Cup (1974–1976). Bavaria was finally able to establish itself in the top of the Bundesliga in the 1970s, while the Lions developed into the elevator team . Towards the end of the 1970s, however, the curve of success at Bayern was also down. Twelfth place in the 1977/78 season was FCB's worst placement in the Bundesliga to date. In that season, TSV 1860 was able to win a derby for the last time for many years, but was still relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . Success at Bayern returned at the beginning of the 1980s, and in 1860, after the license was withdrawn in the summer of 1982, he had to move into the third division.
"Schicki-Micki-Club" against "Workers' Association" (1982–1994)
The forced relegation of TSV 1860 to the Bayern League had serious consequences for the club: the squad had to be almost completely replaced and by 1991 the club often only narrowly missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. Bavaria, however, found its way back on the road to success, u. a. with five championships in six years as well as two participation ( 1982 and 1987 ) in the final of the European Cup (which both were lost). During this time, both teams only competed sporadically in test matches. Due to the significantly different sporting development, the image of the "Schicki-Micki-Club" FC Bayern, whose games were often attended by personalities from business and politics, and of the “workers' association” in 1860. In the lions' Bayernliga years, however, there were regular derbies against the amateurs of Bayern , in which the blues mostly had the upper hand. Another derby took place in 1982 in the second round of the DFB Cup , which TSV 1860 won 1-0.
Return of TSV 1860 (1994-2004)
After the Löwen spent 12 years mainly in the Bayernliga , they returned to the Bundesliga in 1994. In the same year , FC Bayern celebrated its 13th championship. While the first derbies were won relatively clearly by Bayern , TSV 1860 was able to celebrate first respectable successes in 1996 (three draws in a row). The Lions achieved their first derby victory after 22 years in November 1999 and the second leg was also won (through an own goal by Jens Jeremies, who had moved to Bayern from 1860 two years earlier ). With 4th place in the final table, TSV 1860 reached the qualification for the Champions League for the first time , but was eliminated there against Leeds United . In June of that year, the DFB was awarded the contract for the 2006 World Cup , which made the stadium topic more important again. Both clubs agreed with the city of Munich for a joint new building in Munich-Fröttmaning , which led to heated debates within and between the fan scenes. After the successes at the turn of the millennium, the gradual decline of TSV 1860 began: The 1: 5 in October 2001 sealed the dismissal of long-time coach Werner Lorant , while Bayern won the Champions League , the World Cup and the third championship in a row that year . Until TSV 1860 was relegated in 2004 , FC Bayern was able to win all derbies again.
Together in the Allianz Arena (2005-2017)
In 2005, both clubs moved to the newly built Allianz Arena . TSV 1860 won the first arena derby 1-0 on June 2, 2005. This was followed by two more test games, including the farewell game for Giovane Élber , in which TSV 1860 remained undefeated. Due to financial problems, TSV 1860 Munich was forced to sell its shares in the stadium company to FC Bayern in April 2006. This made FC Bayern the sole owner. The first and so far only competitive game in the arena took place in February 2008 as part of the DFB Cup quarter-finals , which FC Bayern won 1-0 after extra time. The day before, unknown Bayern fans had painted parts of the west curve of the Grünwalder Stadium in red and white, the club colors of FC Bayern.
Since moving to the arena, the two clubs have developed very differently. While the TSV 1860 still achieved attendance averages between 28,000 and 41,000 in the first few years, this leveled off later to just over 20,000. Despite investments by the Jordanian businessman Hasan Ismaik, the Lions remained in the second Bundesliga and in 2015 and 2016 were in acute danger of relegation. In 2017 there was finally relegation and, due to the refusal of license for the 3rd division, the crash into the fourth division.
The TSV has already worked out various solutions to the unsatisfactory stadium situation several times, including in March 2009 by a "Stadium Future Project Group", which unanimously agreed to return to an expanded Grünwald stadium with a capacity of 30,000 to 35,000 spectators, which the city as the owner however refused. At the beginning of 2016, Ismaik announced a new building in Riem near the trade fair city , which should hold at least 52,000 places. These plans were rejected by the City of Munich in March 2017.
On the part of FC Bayern, however, the construction of the new stadium can serve as the basis for sporting and economic success and the return to the top floor of European football. Since 2014 - 16 years ahead of the original budget - the stadium has been paid off and gives the club greater leeway on the transfer market. In 2010 , the club reached the final of the Champions League again and always made it to the semi-finals in the 2011/12 to 2015/16 seasons . In 2013 they won the title against Borussia Dortmund , and for the first time in the club's history the triple and the Club World Cup were won . Five years later , the club was able to celebrate six German championships in a row for the first time, and the DFB Cup has also been won several times.
Extract of TSV 1860 from the common venue (since 2017)
After TSV 1860 crashed out of the second Bundesliga into the fourth-class Bavarian regional league , the 2017/18 season saw the first duels since 1993 between the first team from 1860 and the FC Bayern amateurs. On July 12, 2017, it was announced that the rental agreement between TSV 1860 Munich and Allianz Arena Stadion GmbH, which originally ran until 2025, had been terminated. The lion turned so after 23 years again permanently in the respected by many fans as the ancestral home Grünwalder Stadium project. On October 22, 2017, the second team of FC Bayern won the derby against the first selection of TSV 1860 with 1-0. Bayern also won the second leg on the third last match day . Both games were also broadcast live on BR television and reached a peak of 780,000 viewers. Due to the promotion of TSV 1860 to the 3rd division and the remaining of the second team of the sixties in the Bayernliga , there was no clash in the adult division in the 2018/19 season for the first time since 1993/94.
In summer 2018, FC Bayern redesigned the interior as the sole user of the Allianz Arena. At the same time, the TSV 1860 was approved by the city council to expand the capacity of the Grünwald stadium to 15,000 seats. In the summer of 2019, after eight years of abstinence, the second representative of FC Bayern returned to the 3rd division. The first meeting of the two opponents ended 1: 1, the second leg was played as a ghost game due to the corona pandemic and won 2: 1 by the second team of FC Bayern, which became champions of the 3rd division at the end of the season and thus for the fourth time after 1982/83 , 1984/85 and 1986/87 was better placed than the first team of TSV 1860.
Overview of the games
The first game between the two clubs took place on September 21, 1902 in Clemensstrasse in the Schwabing district of Munich . At that time (until 1918) TSV 1860 Munich was still called TV 1860 Munich. According to the current count, there have been a total of 204 clashes between the two clubs, with FC Bayern winning 104 times and TSV 1860 leaving the pitch 49 times. 51 games ended in a draw.
The following list is incomplete. Since the archives of TSV 1860 were largely destroyed in the Second World War , the games before the war in the lists available today are almost exclusively documented by records from FC Bayern. However, there is evidence in daily newspapers or still existing club magazines of the TSV 1860 about further clashes of the two clubs, for example an 8: 0 of the lions on December 22nd, 1918 or a 3: 3 in the carnival 1938.

The amateur derby
In addition to the games of the first two teams, the meeting of the second representatives was followed by greater media interest. The amateurs of FC Bayern were able to qualify for them straight away when the third-rate regional leagues were introduced in 1994. The amateurs of TSV 1860 rose in 1997 from the fourth class Bayernliga and played - with an interruption from 2001 to 2004 - until 2008 also third class. With the introduction of the 3rd division in 2008, the two second representations parted ways for the time being: Bayern II - the official name from 2005 - was able to qualify for the first season , 1860 II , on the other hand, continued to play in the now fourth-class Regionalliga Süd. In 2011, however, Bayern rose again, which resulted in two derbies in the Regionalliga Süd. As part of the restructuring of the regional leagues in 2012, both teams have since participated in the newly founded (and still fourth-class) Regional League Bayern . Both teams reached first place in the first two years ( 1860 II in the 2012/13 season , Bayern II in the 2013/14 season ), but failed in the relegation games and thus remained in the Regionalliga Bayern. The overall balance of all games is slightly positive for FC Bayern. With the crash of the TSV 1860 first team into fourth division in 2017 and the associated forced relegation of the TSV amateur team to the fifth division Bayernliga , the 20-year period of often heated amateur derbies ended. Instead, there were two derbies in the Regionalliga Bayern between the first 1860 team and the amateurs of FC Bayern, before the first TSV team rose to the third division , but their amateur team remained in the Bayernliga.
In contrast to the other league games of both teams, the derbies were usually well attended. As a rule, several thousand spectators attended the games, which almost always took place in the stadium on Grünwalder Strasse . After the one-year renovation of the stadium in 2012/13 - both derbies were held in Unterhaching that season - the derbies were even sold out for the first time. In August 2014, the amateur derby was broadcast live on television for the first time.
Others
The 1997 documentary Local Derby - A City in Football Fever by director Matti Bauer tells the traditional rivalry between the two teams and the story of their encounters with historical film recordings and numerous interviews with former and active players as well as fans and celebrities from Munich.

Remarks
- ↑ The game had to be stopped in the 35th minute due to a storm. FC Bayern led 2-0.
- ↑ Aborted at 0: 1 after several assaults. FC Bayern, established as champions, later decided not to play a repeat game, so the game was rated x: 0 for 1860.
- ↑ Originally scheduled as a league game, shortly before kick-off the teams decided to play the game only as a private game due to poor pitch. When the audience found out about it, they stormed the pitch when the score was 0: 1 and caused the game to be aborted. The league game was rescheduled on January 27th.
- ↑ Due to the tie, the game had to be repeated ten days later.
- ↑ The game was decided by a coin toss in favor of TSV 1860.
- ↑ Inauguration game of the back straight in the Grünwalder Straße stadium.
