The swamp cross spider ( Araneus alsine ), also called strawberry spider , is a species of spider from the genus of the cross spiders ( Araneus ) within the family of the real orb web spiders (Araneidae).

features

The marsh cross spider is one of the most colorful garden spiders. The females reach a size of about 11 to 15 millimeters. The color of the back of the rare species ranges from a strong beige to a rich orange. It is almost spherical and speckled with numerous yellowish-white dots.

Way of life

The spider builds small webs with fewer than 20 spokes in the herbaceous layer near the ground and lurks for prey in a bag-shaped leaf near it during the day. The species occurs in moist, grassy forest clearings and wet meadows .

Mating takes place in June and July, and eggs are laid in July and August. The young spiders hatch in late summer, overwinter as adolescents and become adults in early summer. Adult animals can be observed from June or July.

The stocks are declining in many places. B. in the Red List of Harvesters and Spiders in Saxony (1996) as endangered (3). Nationwide, the marsh spider is also classified as endangered in Germany's Red List of Endangered Animals (3). 1
