Status: end of career

Alexander Madlung (born July 11, 1982 in Braunschweig ) is a former German soccer player .

Club career

youth

Madlung began playing soccer with Sportfreunde Ölper in 1986 and was brought to Eintracht Braunschweig by his father as a D-youth . He moved to VfL Wolfsburg's B youth team , stayed there for a year and a half and then went back to Eintracht.

professional

Hertha BSC

In July 1999 he moved to Hertha BSC's A-youth team . His breakthrough came in the match against FC Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup , in which Huub Stevens used him as an amateur for the first time after the loss of several injured players. Shortly afterwards he received a professional contract. In the Bundesliga Madlung debuted on the ninth day of the season 2002/03 against FC Energie Cottbus . In the 2-0 away win, he formed the defense center of Berlin together with Eyjölfur Sverrisson .

In the following season Madlung became a regular player. Behind Arne Friedrich and Josip Šimunić , he played the most games in Hertha defense. He scored his first league goal on November 8, 2003 against Borussia Mönchengladbach with a header goal in the 86th minute for a 2-1 home win. With his goal on the 33rd matchday of the 2003/04 season in the 82nd minute at TSV 1860 Munich , Hertha secured relegation. In the following seasons he came to the Berliners on regular assignments.

VfL Wolfsburg

During the 2006 summer break, Madlung moved to VfL Wolfsburg . There he was part of the regular squad right away. After Felix Magath became a coach in Wolfsburg, Madlung found it difficult to assert himself consistently. In the championship year 2008/09 he came to 24 games, but was substituted on or off twelve times. Therefore, saying goodbye to Wolfsburg was discussed again and again. Nevertheless, Madlung extended his contract with VfL Wolfsburg until June 30, 2013 in the second half of the season.

In the 2009/10 season he was again part of the team's central defense. The following year, VfL was in a relegation battle and after a change of coach, the interim coach Pierre Littbarski suspended Alexander Madlung and the Dane Thomas Kahlenberg in February 2011 . When Magath returned as the third coach of the season, Madlung came back in nine of the remaining ten season games and kept the class with the team. On the 13th matchday (November 19, 2011) Madlung scored the 4-1 against Hannover 96 with a free kick from about 23 meters and thus scored the goal of the 13th matchday. After another coach change in the course of the 2012/13 season to Dieter Hecking , Madlung did not come to the train as hoped. A few weeks before the end of the season, Madlung was informed by the club that he would not receive a new contract.

In September 2013 Madlung completed a trial session with the Greek UEFA Champions League participant PAOK Thessaloniki , who was trained by former Bundesliga coach Huub Stevens . As a player without a club, he could still have changed clubs after the end of the transfer period on August 31, 2013, but according to statements by the Greek club, a change did not take place due to poor results in the medical check. Madlung, on the other hand, resisted these statements and claimed himself that he had received an offer from the association that was ready to be signed and that did not live up to the previously agreed agreements.

Eintracht Frankfurt

In the winter break 2013/14 he was signed by Eintracht Frankfurt . He signed a performance-related contract valid until June 30, 2015. He played his first game for Frankfurt on matchday 18 against his former club Hertha BSC (1-0). On the 24th matchday he scored his first goal in the game against Hamburger SV with a side pull. By the end of the season, he scored another goal and received a yellow card. In the 2014/15 season he scored four times for Eintracht with five yellow cards. A new contract offer submitted to him by Eintracht Frankfurt was rejected by Madlung and had been without a club since June 30, 2015.

Fortuna Dusseldorf

On October 21, 2015, Madlung signed a contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf that ran until June 30, 2017 . After 34 league games, he left Fortuna at the end of the 2016/17 season and thus ended his career.

National team

On August 28, 2006 he was appointed by national coach Joachim Loew for the first time in the squad of the national team for the games against Ireland and San Marino , but was not used. He made his debut on October 7, 2006 in the international match against Georgia . In the 2-0 win, he came on in the 84th minute for Manuel Friedrich . On March 28, 2007 Madlung came to his second and last assignment for the DFB selection. In the 1-0 defeat against Denmark , Madlung and Manuel Friedrich formed the defense center.
