Malik Deniz Fathi (born October 29, 1983 in Berlin ) is a former German soccer player . The 1.85 m tall left-back is the son of a father of Turkish origin and a German mother.
Career
society
Fathi began his career at Hertha Zehlendorf Berlin and Tennis Borussia Berlin . After graduating from high school, he then played for Hertha BSC for almost seven years , for which he made his Bundesliga debut on November 1, 2003 against VfL Wolfsburg . In the 75th minute, the then coach Huub Stevens changed him for Andreas Schmidt . In the course of the further season he came regularly to other missions. The defensive player made his first appearance in the starting line-up seven game days after his debut, on January 31, 2004 in the game against Werder Bremen . From then on he belonged to the first eleven of the Berliners. For the next four years, Fathi was placed in the left-back position. He achieved his best placement with Hertha in the 2004/05 season when they finished fourth in the Bundesliga. He had to wait until the 2006/07 season for his first league goal. In the 2: 4 defeat against FC Bayern Munich , he scored the 1: 3 with a header.
In March 2008 Fathi moved to Spartak Moscow in the Russian Premier League . One reason for this transfer was that Hertha coach Lucien Favre switched from four to three and thus no longer needed Fathi as a left-back. Previously, he had played the full game against Borussia Dortmund on the 23rd matchday, March 7th, 2008 . Shortly afterwards, Fathi made his debut in the Premier League in a 0-0 draw against the then champions Zenit St. Petersburg .
On February 1, 2010, Fathi was loaned to the Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 until the end of the 2009/10 season, then again for the 2010/11 season . For the 2011/12 season , Fathi finally signed a three-year contract with Mainz 05.
For the 2012/13 season , Fathi was loaned to Kayserispor for one year and a loan fee of 200,000 euros . Kayserispor also had a purchase option of 600,000 euros. In the winter break 2012/13 he was awarded to TSV 1860 Munich until the end of the season, for which he was used in all 15 outstanding season games.
After returning to Mainz 05, Fathi only played two league games for Rheinhessen in the 2013/14 season . His contract was not renewed after the end of the season, and Fathi was then without a club for half a year. In January 2015 he joined the Spanish third division club Atlético Baleares from Palma . Fathi ended his active career in July 2018.
In the 2018/19 season, Fathi was employed as a mental coach at Atlético Baleares . Since the beginning of the 2019/20 season he has been assistant coach of the Hertha BSC U23 team under Andreas "Zecke" Neuendorf
National team
Fathi played 18 times for the German U-21 national team , previously for the U-20s. With the U-21 selection, the defender took part in Euro 2004 (one mission) and 2006 (two missions). On August 16, 2006, he played his first game for the German national team in the friendly against Sweden . At halftime he was substituted on by national coach Joachim Löw for Marcell Jansen . On October 7, 2006, Fathi played in a 15-minute mission against Georgia for the second and last time for the DFB.
