The San Marino national football team (Italian: Nazionale di calcio di San Marino) is the selection of the Republic of San Marino and is controlled by the FSGC .

The first official international match was played by San Marino on November 14, 1990 in qualifying for the 1992 European Championship against Switzerland and lost 4-0. Since then, San Marino has participated in all qualifications, always finished last in its group and has never won before. The team only won one game, it was a 1-0 win over Liechtenstein in a friendly on April 24, 2004.

In the FIFA world rankings , San Marino was 121st place at the start of the ranking in 1993, but then fell to 207th place in the following 20 years - the worst ranking of all teams rated. After a draw against Estonia in qualifying for the Euro 2016 , the first point to be won in a competitive game, San Marino has now climbed to 180th place. The team is currently in penultimate place. history

San Marino have never been able to qualify for a world or European championship. The country's association was founded in 1931. He has been a FIFA member since 1990 and was previously a provisional member of UEFA for two years . According to FIFA, there are around 2800 football players in the republic with a population of 30,000, of which 1500 are registered. After a few unofficial games - including against an Olympic team from Canada (1986) and against Lebanon (1987) - the first official match against Switzerland took place on November 14, 1990 . On April 28, 2004, the first victory celebrated as “historic” came: In Serravalle , San Marino beat Liechtenstein 1-0 in a friendly. A competitive win has not yet been achieved. There were only two draws in qualifying rounds for the soccer world championship: in qualifying for the 1994 world championship a 0-0 win against Turkey, and in qualifying for the 2002 world championship a 1-1 draw against Latvia. For six and a half years, San Marino was the last place the team shared with Bhutan and the Turks and Caicos Islands with 0 points on the FIFA world rankings . In November 2014, with a draw against Estonia in qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship, they jumped from bottom of the FIFA world rankings to 180th place.

In the course of its history, San Marino has only produced one well-known player: midfielder Massimo Bonini , who played for Juventus Turin between 1981 and 1988 and was three times Italian champions with his club and won the European Cup once. Ten teams were able to achieve their highest victory against San Marino. Only against Guam could more teams (12) achieve their highest victory.

From 1998 to 2013 the coach was former professional soccer player Giampaolo Mazza, who worked full-time as a sports teacher . Of the 76 European Championship and World Cup qualifiers that were played during his tenure, 75 were lost. After the group stage in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he resigned. In qualifying for the European Championship 2016 , San Marino met England , Switzerland , Estonia , Lithuania and Slovenia . On November 15, 2014 in Serravalle, in a goalless draw against the Estonian team, they won their first point after 13 years and 61 defeats in a row. Against England and Lithuania one goal each could be scored.

San Marino plays its home games in the 5,387-seat San Marino Stadium in Serravalle, the only international stadium in the republic.

International matches against German-speaking teams

International matches against Germany

Germany and San Marino were drawn into qualification group D for the EM 2008 . On September 6, 2006, the teams met for the first time in Serravalle. The game ended 0:13 (0: 6) and is the highest defeat of the San-Marinese soccer team so far, while it is the highest away win for the German team. The second leg took place on June 2, 2007 in Nuremberg , it was lost 6-0 (0-1), with San Marino just missing a 0-0 at halftime.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , San Marino again met Germany, who took part in the qualification as the reigning world champion. The home game on November 11, 2016 was lost 8-0. The second leg in Germany took place on June 10, 2017 and was lost 7-0.

International matches against Switzerland

So far, San Marino has played four times against the Swiss national football team , two games were competitive games during qualification for the 1992 European Championship . San Marino lost the first leg on November 14, 1990 in Serravalle 4-0, and the second leg on June 5, 1991 in St. Gallen 7-0. In qualifying for the Euro 2016 , San Marino met Switzerland again on October 14, 2014 (0: 4) and October 9, 2015 (0: 7).

International matches against Liechtenstein

So far, San Marino has played against the Liechtenstein national football team four times:

Both games so far played against the Austrian national soccer team were competitive games in qualifying for the 2000 European Championship . In the first leg in Serravalle on October 14, 1998, the San Marines lost 4-1 after they had not conceded a goal as the home side until the 58th minute. In the 81st minute, Andy Selva even scored the connecting goal for San Marino. The Austrians won the second leg in Graz on April 28, 1999 with 7-0.

Andy Selva has long been the only player in the San Marino national team to score more than one goal for the San Marino national team. Manuel Marani scored his second goal against Malta on August 14, 2012 . Third to last goalscorer for San Marino is Mattia Stefanelli , who on October 11, 2016, scored the interim 1-1 in a 4-1 win in the World Cup qualifier in Norway. A month later, however, he made an own goal in the 8-0 win against world champions Germany . The last goal so far was scored by Filippo Berardi on November 16, 2019 in a 3-1 win against Kazakhstan.
