Massimo Bonini (born October 13, 1959 in San Marino City ) is a former San Marino football player , coach and sports official . To this day, he is considered one of the best and most successful San Marinese soccer players in history.

Career

In the club

The career of the blond midfielder started in 1977 in Marino's san-near his home located Bellaria-Igea Marina in AC Bellaria in the Series D . After short-term engagements at AS Forlì and AC Cesena , he moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin in 1981 . With this club Massimo Bonini won the Scudetto , the Italian championship and 1983 the Coppa Italia in 1982, 1984 and 1986 . He achieved his first international title in 1984 after his team's 2-1 final victory against FC Porto in the European Cup Winners' Cup . On May 29, 1985 Bonini was in the final of the European Cup against Liverpool (1-0) and was an eyewitness to the Heysel disaster when 39 people were killed after rioting by hooligans .

As the successor to Giuseppe Furino at Juventus, Bonini also enjoyed individual success from the start: In 1983, he was awarded the Trofeo Bravo as the best young European player . In the star ensemble around Michel Platini , Zbigniew Boniek , Gaetano Scirea and Paolo Rossi , he defended his regular place for years. In total, he played 296 games for Juventus, scoring six goals. He let his career end between 1988 and 1993 at FC Bologna , where he scored another five goals in 112 games.

In the national team

Massimo Bonini played a total of nine times in the U-21 selection of the Italian association . He was not allowed to play A international matches for Italy because of his origins in San Marino. Between 1990 and 1995 he made 19 caps for San Marino .

As a trainer

After retiring from active sport, Massimo Bonini was the coach of the San Marino national soccer team between 1996 and 1998 . Between 1998 and 2000 he worked as a youth coach at AC Cesena , after which he worked as a sports director for the Emilian club.

successes

In 2004 he received the Golden Ball from the San Marinos Football Association . This honor was linked to the election of the best football player in his country between 1954 and 2003.
