Player career

society

Eyjólfur Sverrisson began his career at the Icelandic club Tindastóll Sauðárkrókur , where he was active for many years in the club's youth teams and from 1985 was also used for the men's team. From 1985 to 1989 he had 79 league appearances and the resulting 66 goals. During the winter break in 1989/90 he was about to move to mainland Europe, where he finally signed a contract with VfB Stuttgart . Back then as an attacker, he made his Bundesliga debut on April 21, 1990 in a 3-1 home win against Werder Bremen . Coach Willi Entenmann brought Eyjólfur in the 76th minute for Olaf Schmäler . In the following year, the offensive player came to more missions and competed with Manfred Kastl for second place in the storm next to Fritz Walter . For the season 1991/92 Eyjólfur Sverrisson was able to win the German championship with the club . Under Christoph Daum he was then used more and more in midfield. During the football year 1992/93 he scored seven goals, which is a personal record. He never got more hits in one season. In the summer of 1994 he left Swabia and moved to Turkey. After a season at Beşiktaş Istanbul , after which he was able to win the Turkish championship, "Jolly" moved to Hertha BSC , where he first made promotion to the Bundesliga in 1997 and won the League Cup twice in a row in 2001 and 2002 , but without to have participated in the final game. At the capital club he was finally retrained as a defender. After the rise, he mostly formed the Hertha defensive with Dick van Burik , Steffen Karl , Andreas Schmidt and Hendrik Herzog .

In total, Eyjólfur played 250 games in the Bundesliga in which he scored 30 goals. There are also 56 games in the second Bundesliga for Hertha BSC.

National team

Eyjólfur Sverrisson ran a total of 60 times for the Icelandic national team between 1990 and 2001 . He got ten hits. During his entire time as a selection player, he was one of the stars of his team, but did not manage to qualify with the team for a World or European Championship.

Coaching career

On November 1, 2005, Eyjólfur replaced his former mentor and former VfB player Ásgeir Sigurvinsson as Iceland's national coach . When it became known that his contract would not be renewed, Eyjólfur Sverrisson resigned on October 29, 2007. In 14 international matches, he and his team could only record two wins, including a 3-0 win and a 2-1 win over Northern Ireland . The coach was replaced by compatriot Ólafur Jóhannesson .

Since 2009 he has been in charge of the Icelandic U-21 national team , which he led in 2011 for the first time at the U-21 European Championship .

In February 2011 after the dismissal of coach Steve McClaren at the German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg and the takeover by assistant coach Pierre Littbarski, Eyjólfur was accepted into the coaching staff of the wolves , where he worked as Littbarski's assistant. The contact between Wolfsburg and Eyjólfur Sverrisson came about through VfL manager Dieter Hoeneß , with whom Eyjólfur has had a friendly relationship since his time in Berlin. After Felix Magath was signed as head coach at VfL Wolfsburg on March 18, 2011, the club parted ways with him. Bernd Hollerbach took his place as assistant coach .
