Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson (born August 6, 1990 in Sauðárkrókur ) is an Icelandic football player . He is the son of long-time Bundesliga professional and national player Eyjólfur Sverrisson .

youth

Hólmar Eyjólfsson was born in Sauðárkrókur and moved to Kópavogur with his family at the age of seven and stayed there until shortly before his 18th birthday. In Kópavogur, he started playing football in earnest. His first club was FC Tindastóll.

Club career

Hólmar Eyjólfsson made his debut for HK Kópavogur in the Landsbankadeild , Iceland's highest division , in the 2007 season at the age of 16 . After a total of 19 missions, the central defender, who was also used in defensive midfield, finally moved to the English Premier League club West Ham United in summer 2008 and signed a long-term contract. In October 2009 he was loaned to fourth division Cheltenham Town for a month and made his competitive debut in English football.

Even after his return from Cheltenham, Hólmar did not get beyond missions for the reserve team and was therefore awarded again in January 2010. For half a year he was supposed to collect match practice with the relegation-threatened Belgian first division club KSV Roeselare , but only made eight appearances there.

In June 2011 he signed a contract with VfL Bochum until 2014 . Hólmar Eyjólfsson made his first game on December 4, 2011 (17th matchday) when he came on for Marcel Maltritz in the 82nd minute in the 6-0 home win against FC Erzgebirge Aue .

In August 2014 Hólmar moved to Rosenborg Trondheim in Norway , where he was part of the permanent staff for the remainder of the 2014 season.

At the end of 2016 he signed a four and a half year contract with Maccabi Haifa . After just over half a year in the Israeli Ligat ha'Al , he was loaned to Levski Sofia in Bulgaria on September 1, 2017 . For the 2018/19 season he moved permanently to the 26-time Bulgarian champion.

National team

In 2007 he surprisingly qualified with the U-17 team for the finals of the U-17 European Championship , after beating the youngsters from Portugal and Russia in the second qualifying round. In the final tournament, Hólmar played all three games in his unfamiliar position as a defensive midfielder over the full playing time, but could not prevent the pointless elimination. He then belonged to the Icelandic U-19 selection team, which only missed the final round in the last game of the second qualifying round for the U-19 European Championship in 2008 due to a 2-1 defeat by the Bulgarian team as second in the group. Shortly after the U-17 European Championship, he made his debut in November 2007 at the age of 17 in the U-21 in Iceland and has been a permanent member of the team ever since.

He was part of the Icelandic squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia , but was not used during the tournament.
