Marco Engelhardt (born December 2, 1980 in Bad Langensalza ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

In his youth, Engelhardt first played for Landbau or Prussia Bad Langensalza , before joining the youth team of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in 1994 . There he made the leap to the first team that played in the regional league in 1999. He fought for a regular place in his first season and increasingly became a top performer. Together with his friend Clemens Fritz , he left the club in 2001 for Karlsruher SC , where both quickly secured a regular place.

In 2004 they parted ways. While Fritz moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen , Engelhardt moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he experienced a steep rise in his career. As soon as he moved from the second division to Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga, the defensive midfielder developed into a leading player and impressed with consistently good performances. This year he managed to be nominated for the national team after only 14 Bundesliga games . His first of three international matches - including one in the starting XI - he played on December 16, 2004 on a trip to Asia, for which some regular players had canceled, in a 3-0 win against Japan in Yokohama .

In the following season, in which he was captain, he could not confirm the hopes placed in him and his performance in the relegation battle of FCK subsided. He was often used as a left defender under Wolfgang Wolf . After the descent of the Palatinate in 2006, he left the club and joined 1. FC Nürnberg . Due to a torn cruciate ligament Engelhardt suffered in his last game for the Lauterer, he could not play a game for his new club in the first half of the 2006/07 season. On March 3, 2007 he came in the game at Arminia Bielefeld for the first time for the Nuremberg team, where he immediately scored a goal. With good performances he secured his regular place in the left midfield. The greatest success with FCN was winning the 2007 DFB Cup final, scoring one goal each in the semi-finals and in the final.

After a difficult start to the 2007/08 season , in which he was assigned to the 2nd team for three games to build up his form, he was regularly used again during the season and was an experienced player in the relegation battle in the season's final spurt. Nevertheless, in the end, 1. FC Nürnberg was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. There he could not hold his regular place again. He came in the first half of 2008/09 on twelve missions, where he only played twice for the full time.

In the winter break of the 2008/09 season , Engelhardt returned to the first division club Karlsruher SC. He signed a contract until 2012. By the end of the season he had eleven appearances, then he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, where he remained a regular. At the end of the 2010/11 season, Engelhardt's contract with KSC was terminated by mutual agreement.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, he completed a trial session with the English second division team Peterborough United and was used there in a test match, but received no contract. For the second half of the third division season he returned to Rot-Weiß Erfurt. There he was used flexibly in defense or in defensive midfield and was used in all second round games, where he scored one goal.

In early September 2014 Engelhardt moved to third division rivals Hallescher FC . In the summer of 2016, he joined the regional league team of Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . Engelhardt ended his active career in summer 2018; he is currently working as a scout at SV Werder Bremen. He is also preparing for the A trainer license, which he would like to acquire in 2019.
