The Skymetro is a fully automatic, underground , cable-driven air-cushion runway implemented by Poma - Otis , which has been connecting the centrally located Airside Center with the Dock E satellite terminal at Zurich Airport since September 2003 . The railway needs two to three minutes for the approximately 1.1 km long route, which runs through two separate tunnels under the western runway 10/28.

technology

Skymetro tunnel

The 1138-meter-long route is covered by the Skymetro, which is pulled by a steel cable, on an air cushion about 0.2 millimeters thick, generated by air compressors , over a smooth concrete floor . The transport of the vehicle compositions is ensured with five cable loops, which are driven in both tunnels by two engines of 465  kilowatts and in the long turns by two engines of 266 kilowatts and in the storage hall by a motor of 55 kilowatts. The connection with the pull rope is made per chassis with two laterally hydraulically horizontally displaceable clamps for positioning over the desired drive rope, which is lifted.

A special highlight are the pictures on the tunnel wall that are adapted to the speed of the train, resulting in a flip book- like animation. The short films show the Alps and a waving Heidi . Yodelling and the beginning of the Heidi melody are played at the same time .

history

The Skymetro was built as part of the fifth construction phase in 2001 and first put into operation in 2003.

As of July 2009, the Skymetro was expanded and rebuilt as part of the “Zurich 2010” construction project, which mainly included the centralization of security controls and the construction of the security control building. Arriving and departing as well as passengers from the Schengen area and passengers from non-Schengen departure airports will now be transported separately. A division of the stations ensures the continuous separation of the checked and unchecked passengers after the centralization of the security controls. In order to be able to compensate for the higher usage associated with this division, the three train compositions were expanded from two to three units. For the expansion and addition, emphasis was placed on the consideration of Swiss cable car companies: The cable car systems come from Poma / F -Otis / USA ; the three new chassis from Bartholet in Flums , the cabins from Gangloff in Bern , the pull rope from Fatzer in Romanshorn and the Altdorf-based company SISAG supplied the electrical controls.

Legal classification

The Skymetro can only be used by passengers. It is not a public means of transport, but a secondary facility of Zurich Airport and is covered by the airport concession. The Federal Office of Transport (BAV) therefore exercises supervision on behalf of the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). On July 18, 2003, the FOT issued the operating license for 20 years.

reception

With 6.73 million passengers (2010), it is the most efficient ropeway system in Switzerland, and at 176 million Swiss francs it is also the most expensive. It is one of the most demanding cable car systems and has a high standard of expansion and safety. The train contains a triple security surveillance.
