The Otis Elevator Company is the world's largest manufacturer of elevator systems . The company currently employs around 60,000 people worldwide, including around 2,200 in Germany , almost 600 in Austria , around 460 in Switzerland and around 9,000 in the USA . From 1975 to 2020, Otis was part of the UTC group of companies .

history

The company was founded in New York City in 1853 by Elisha Graves Otis after he invented a safety gear .

In 1908 Otis built a prototype automobile for the Sultan Motor Company in Springfield, Massachusetts . Regular production of the vehicles, mostly sold as taxis, took place until around 1910, after which the vehicles were built by Sultan himself.

The German subsidiary Flohr-Otis was established in 1951 through the takeover of the Carl Flohr company , Berlin-Borsigwalde.

In 1975 the Otis Elevator Company became part of the American group United Technologies Corporation .

Otis installed the world's first elevator system in the Demarest Building in Manhattan, others in the Eiffel Tower , CN Tower , Burj Khalifa and the Empire State Building , among others . The elevators in the former World Trade Center were also from Otis. At the time of its construction, the OTIS Shibayama Test Tower was the highest test tower in the world at 154 meters until 2007 . It is 39 stories above and six stories below the ground. An extension has three more floors above ground. The entire building area is 12,793 square meters. There are eleven elevator shafts in the tower for the development of future elevators, such as the double-deck elevator and the ropeless linear elevator.

In February 2007 the EU Competition Commission imposed a record cartel fine of EUR 224.93 million for participating in the elevator and escalator cartel , to which Otis, Kone , Schindler and ThyssenKrupp also belonged. Damaged companies also sue the perpetrators for damages.

Research and development centers are located in the USA, Japan, China, France, Germany, Austria and Spain. Otis has manufacturing facilities in Europe, Asia and America and offices in more than 200 countries.

In 2015, Otis strategically expanded the company: Otis entered the fire protection market by taking over two companies. The Otis fire protection division is to be established under the name Kidde and sells, among other things, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, extinguishing water technology and escape route lighting; it also offers fire protection training.

In 2020, in the course of further takeovers by the parent company, the Otis Elevator Company was floated on the stock exchange via a spin-off under the name Otis Worldwide.

Otis Germany

The company's head office for Germany is located on Otisstrasse in Berlin-Tegel . A total of € 514 million in sales was achieved in Germany in 2016 with 2,200 employees.

Otis Austria

The Austrian elevator company Anton Freissler had existed since 1868, i.e. around a hundred years independently, in 1969 Otis became the majority owner. As an Otis subsidiary, in the 1970s, following the corporate philosophy, Freissler was renamed Freissler-Otis. In 1991 the name was changed to “Otis Austria” GmbH.

"Otis Austria" is headquartered in Vienna and in 2009 employed 550 people with whom the subsidiary achieved a turnover of 120 million euros. There are 30,000 lift systems in operation in Austria.

Otis Spain

The Spanish daughter of Otis is Zardoya Otis. United Technologies holds 50% of the shares in this independent company. The remaining shares are traded over the counter. Zardoya Otis produces in Madrid and San Sebastian for the Spanish market and export to other countries. The main source of revenue for the company is the maintenance of elevators, escalators and automatic doors. Over 70% of sales are made in this area.
