David Régis (born December 2, 1968 in La Trinité , Martinique ) is a former American football player of French origin. By marrying an American, he became a citizen of the United States.
Life
Club career
Régis began his professional career in 1988 with US Valenciennes-Anzin . In 1992 he was promoted to Ligue 1 . After direct relegation in 1993, he moved to Racing Strasbourg . He played there for three years before joining RC Lens in 1996 .
1997 Régis moved to Germany to Karlsruher SC in the Bundesliga . Since he considered the level there to be higher, he wanted to draw attention to himself for a call to the French national team . However, at the end of the season the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga was certain, so that Régis left the club again.
He returned to France in Ligue 1 and signed with FC Metz . There he played for 4 years (6 months with Cagliari Calcio on loan). When they were relegated in 2002 he went to ES Troyes AC .
Despite relegation to Ligue 2 in 2003, he stayed with the club until 2005.
From summer 2005 to 2008 he let his career at FC Bleid end in the fourth Belgian league and then ended his active career as a football player.
National team
Régis originally wanted to be a French international, but was not considered. After his marriage to an American, the coach of the US national team, Steve Sampson, promised him a place in the squad for the 1998 World Cup should he become a citizen of the United States. He was naturalized on May 20 of that year and made his debut three days later against Kuwait in the US national jersey. At the World Cup he played all three games. At the 2002 World Cup , he was again in the squad, but was not used.
