Paul Georges Marie Dupont des Loges (born November 11, 1804 in Rennes , † August 18, 1886 in Metz ) had been Bishop of Metz since 1843 .

Live and act

He was the son of Pierre-Louis Dupont des Loges and his wife Angélique Joséphine Cécile du Bois le Bon de La Choltais. In the years 1821–1828, the young aristocrat studied in his hometown Rennes, then in the seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris ; on December 12, 1828 he was ordained a priest . In 1834 Dupont des Loges was promoted to Canon of Rennes and in 1840 to Vicar General of Orléans.

On September 13, 1842, he was elected Bishop of Metz . The papal confirmation took place on January 27, 1843, on March 5, 1843 he received the episcopal ordination of François Cardinal Morlot . As a bishop, Dupont des Loges was particularly involved in schooling and education. When the French authorities asked him in 1844 to stop German-language sermons and religious instruction in his diocese, he successfully opposed it. In 1870 the pastor took part in the First Vatican Council .

In 1871 his previously French diocese fell to the German Empire. In the Reichstag election in 1874 , Paul Georges Dupont des Loges was elected to the German Reichstag in the constituency of Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen 14 (Metz) , a member of which he remained until 1877. As an independent clerical he did not join any parliamentary group in the Reichstag, but worked closely with the Center Party .

After his death, the bishop was buried on August 25, 1886 in the Saint-Livier chapel of Metz Cathedral. In his will, he had large sums distributed to the needy. In Metz, the "Rue Dupont des Loges" is named after him.
