Jacques-François Besson

Jacques-François Besson (born September 12, 1756 in Mieugy , † July 23, 1842 in Metz ) was Bishop of Metz from 1824 until his death .

Life

After studying theology and law in Lyon , he received a law degree. But he decided to pursue a spiritual career and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1779 . He was later appointed vicar general in Geneva . In 1792 he was captured by French revolutionaries, but was able to flee to Constance and later to Turin and Munich . Finally in 1801 he was able to return as pastor of Saint-Nizier in Lyon. He refused the appointment as Archbishop of Marseille in 1817, but accepted the offices of Grand Almoss Master in Paris in 1822 and Honorary Canons of Saint-Denis in 1823.

On October 14, 1823 he was elected Bishop of Metz ; the papal confirmation took place on November 24th of the same year. On February 23, 1824 he received the episcopal ordination from Archbishop Jean-Paul-Gaston de Pins , the diocese administrator of the Archdiocese of Lyon . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Belley , Alexandre-Raymond Devie , and the Bishop of Saint-Claude , Antoine-Jacques de Chamon .
