Dagohoy

Dagohoy is a Filipino municipality in the center of Bohol Province with 19,158 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census).

Emergence

Dagohoy's beginnings go back to Dr. Jose Rizal back. After serving his sentence in exile in Dapitan , he came to Bohol to look for an area to establish an agricultural settlement. About 25 years later, in 1920, the Colonia Agricula de Bohol , or Colonia for short , was officially founded . Colonia was then on the territory of the municipality of Carmen . It was not until June 21, 1956, after a decree by the then President Ramon Magsaysay, that an independent municipality was founded, which was named Dagohoy. The name Dagohoy was proposed by the then Vice President Carlos P. Garcia , who himself came from Bohol, in honor of the Boholan hero Francisco Sendrijas, also known as Francisco Dagohoy. Francisco Sendrijas was the founder and leader of an 85 year long rebellion in Bohol against the Spanish central government. The nickname Dagohoy comes from the phrase "dagon sa hoyohoy" ( Cebuano , roughly translated as talisman of a gentle breeze ). The talisman refers to an amulet that Francisco Sendrijas wore and which is said to have protected him from his enemies. Since he was able to escape his opponents again and again, it was also said that he had the protection of a gentle wind, which easily carried him from hill to hill or to the other bank of the river.

The 15 barangays now belonging to the municipality of Dagohoy were previously part of the neighboring municipalities of Carmen , Ubay and Trinidad .
