Panglao is a municipality in the Bohol Province of the Philippines . Along with Dauis, it is one of two communities on the island of Panglao of the same name , has 33,553 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) and is the southernmost community in Bohol.

The name Panglao goes back to the Spanish who named the place after the word mapanglao , which in the local dialect meant something like lonely place . After the Battle of Mactan in 1521, in which its leader Ferdinand Magellan was killed, the remaining Spaniards sought refuge on the island of Panglao. Since 27 Spaniards perished on Mactan and the crew was now too small to operate all three large ships, the Spaniards burned the Concepción off the coast of Panglaos before they sailed on with the remaining two ships towards Borneo .

Attractions

St. Augustine's Church

The main draws in Panglao are the white sandy beaches along the coast. There are numerous hotel complexes and beach resorts such as Alona Beach, Bohol Beach Club, Danao Beach, Dumaluan Beach, and others. The beaches of Panglao are also used as a starting point for boat tours, for example to Virgin Island or Balicasag , and are also very popular with divers .

Begun in 1894, the construction of St. Augustine's Church dragged on over many years. The church was officially consecrated on August 31, 1924, still not completely finished. The porch and the bell tower on the church were added later, but they are architecturally adapted to the original character of the church.

At the back of the church facing the sea is an old Spanish watchtower .
