Jagna [ xagna ] is a Filipino municipality with 33,892 inhabitants (census August 1, 2015). in the southeast of Bohol Province . The patron saint of the Jagna parish is the Archangel Michael , in whose honor a public holiday is held every year on September 29th.
history
The first historical mention of Jagnas dates back to March 15, 1565, when Miguel López de Legazpi reached the Bohol coast and had his flagship, the San Pedro , repaired on the Bay of Jagna. Church records indicate that the Jesuit priest Jose Sanchez founded the city on September 29, 1631. The first Jagnas settlers came from Loboc and Talibon . On the way to Mindanao with their sailing boats, bad weather forced them to seek shelter on land near today's Jagna. When they found fertile land there, they settled down and planted the first rice fields. At the time of the first settlers, the Boho River was richly populated with fish. The name of the community is said to have its origin in the exclamation "ni hagna ha" . In the local dialect, this is used to describe boiling oil. A school of fish near the surface of the water made the water boil, which looked like boiling coconut oil in the pan. From the ni hagna ha called out by observers of the scenery at such moments, Jagna is said to have developed over time . The river has now dried up, but the traces of the former river bed are still visible.

Economy and Transport
The economic focus of the community is mainly in the areas of food and luxury food production ( Calamay , Tableja - a local chocolate specialty, biscuits), rice processing, production of hollow blocks, furniture and ceramic goods , to name a few of the most important. In addition, fishing and agriculture also play a role as a source of income for the inhabitants.
Jagna is a port city with regular ferry connections to Cagayan de Oro , Nasipit and Mambajao on the island of Camiguin, which is in sight but already part of Mindanao . In addition, numerous bus routes connect Jagna with Tagbilaran and other places throughout Bohol.
Tourism and sightseeing
Jagna is not a major tourist magnet, but visitors will find a lot of things to see here too. On the one hand, there is St. Michael's Church in Jagna. The first church built on this site was destroyed in a fire in 1808, but a new church made of rubble was built in the years that followed. In historical documents it is reported that the roof of this church was initially covered with leaves of the nipa palm . The church was badly damaged in a typhoon in the 1980s and then extensively renovated. The facade lost its original flair, as a lot of concrete was used during the renovation.
In the area of the municipality of Jagna you will find two caves with the Eva Cave and the Cantuyoc Cave , as well as the waterfalls Kinahugan Falls and Boctol Waterfall . The Luinab Rice Terraces are located in Barangay Boctol in the northeast of the municipality of Jagna . The terraces laid out on the slopes of two mountains offer a picturesque sight, especially a few months after the planting season, when the rice fields appear in lush green. A little further north, in Barangay Mayana, the surrounding area rises to up to 820 meters above sea level . Due to the altitude, the climate here is unusually cool and offers optimal conditions for growing ornamental plants and certain vegetables. You can also find fresh cut flowers here.
A stretch of beach popular with tourists and locals alike is located in Barangay Can-uba in the southwest of the municipality. The beach at this point is relatively wide and does not completely disappear into the water even at high tide .
