history

The area of today's Antequera parish was inhabited early on by the Eskaya , an indigenous tribe living in Bohol. Fertile soils and a plentiful supply of water through numerous watercourses and springs offered good conditions for settlement. At the time of the Spanish colonization , the area then became a Barangay called Agad belonging to the municipality of Maribojoc . The center of Agad was then in what is now Barangay Celing. The Boho Spring located there is still one of the most important sources of drinking water to this day . With a steadily growing population, the residents of Agad submitted a request to the Spanish central government to become an independent municipality. A corresponding decree was finally signed on March 17, 1876 by the Governor General of the Philippines Don Romualdo Crespo. The newly created municipality was named Antequera , named after the city of the same name in Spain (→ Antequera ), the birthplace of Don Romualdo Crespo.

Attractions

Mag-Aso Falls

A popular attraction are the Mag-Aso Falls in Barangay Mag-Aso . A staircase encompassing 197 steps leads down a wooded slope to the waterfall falling from a height of almost 8 meters . The name of the waterfall is derived from the word Aso , which means smoke in the local dialect , and alludes to the finely atomized water mist above the falls, which looks like smoke. The waterfall, divided into two arms, flows into a natural pool that invites you to swim in an impressive setting.

Antequera is also known for its basketry, which is for sale every Sunday on the market. The basket weaving dates back to the early 1900s, scoring many decades one of the main sources of income of the inhabitants. Willow rods, rattan , bamboo and some other indigenous materials are used.
