Balicasag is a Filipino island in the Mindanao Sea . It is located about six kilometers southwest of the island of Panglao and belongs to the province of Bohol . About 800 people live on Balicasag on an area of around 30 hectares.
A project launched by Silliman University in 1985 resulted in the establishment of a marine reserve that extends within 500 meters of the island and includes the entire coral reef . Giant clams of the species Hippopus hippopus have been established in a specially protected area of eight hectares off the west coast .
A state-run resort has existed since 1987 and is the only major employer on the island. Day tourists mainly come from the nearby Alona Beach in Panglao for snorkeling or diving to green turtles , reef or tilefish , and bigeye trevally watching or other marine life.
