James Joseph McClean (born April 22, 1989 in Derry ) is an Irish football player who has been under contract with Stoke City since 2018 .

Player career

Derry City (2008-2011)

After initially being active for Institute FC , James McClean moved to local rivals Derry City in 2008 . The club from Derry , Northern Ireland, withdrew from the Northern Irish League in 1972 as a result of the Northern Ireland conflict and has played in the Irish League since 1985. 2010 McClean rose with Derry City as a second division champion in the first division.

Sunderland AFC (2011–)

On August 9, 2011, Sunderland AFC signed McClean. After the dismissal of coach Steve Bruce , he made his debut under his successor Martin O'Neill on December 11, 2011 in a 2-1 home win against Blackburn Rovers . As a result, the 22-year-old won a regular place at the Premier League club. On March 23, 2012, McClean signed a new three-year contract in Sunderland.

National team

James McClean played seven games for the Northern Irish national U-21 team between 2009 and 2010 . After he was nominated for the national team by Northern Ireland coach Nigel Worthington , McClean decided to wait for an offer from the Irish federation. On February 29, 2012 he made his debut for Ireland in the game against the Czech Republic (1: 1).

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Ireland's squad. In the opening game against Sweden, he came on as a substitute for an Irish 1-0 lead in the last third. The game ended 1-1. Against Belgium he was a substitute again, the other two games he played from the start. In the round of 16 against hosts France, he was tactically substituted when the team was outnumbered by being sent off. Ireland lost and eliminated.
