Manchester United

He made his debut for the first team in the League Cup in the semi-final second leg against Derby County , in which he came on in the 67th minute for Gary Neville . Manchester United won the game 4-2 and moved into the final of the League Cup, which Manchester United ultimately won - but Chester was not used. In the further course of the season, "United" also won the Premier League season 2008/09 , in the course of which Chester had only once been in the squad for the away game against Bolton Wanderers .

At the time of the title wins, Chester was from February 2, 2009 Chester was loaned by Manchester United for to Peterborough United , which play in the third highest English division, League One , by means of an emergency loan . He made his debut for Peterborough United on February 20, 2009 in the League One game against Brighton & Hove Albion , which they won 4-2. By the end of his loan on May 25, 2009, Chester played four more games.

In the 2009/10 season on September 26, 2009 Chester was loaned to Plymouth Argyle by Machester United by means of an Emergency Loan . He made his debut on September 27, 2009 in the Football League Championship in a 1-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest . Chester was allowed to play two more games in the league before returning to Manchester United on October 26, 2009.

In the 2010/11 season, Chester was loaned to Carlisle United on August 1, 2010 . In the League One home game against Brentford FC , which they won 2-0, he was allowed to make his debut for Carlisle United. He celebrated his first goal in the Football League Trophy home game against Port Vale when he scored the 1: 2 goal. The game ended with 2-2. On January 7, 2011 Chester returned to Manchester United after 18 league games for Carlisle United.

Hull City

After three professional years at Manchester United, in which he was not allowed to play a single Premier League appearance, Chester moves to the English second division Hull City for the 2011/12 season for 350,000 pounds . He played his first competitive game on August 5, 2011 in the 0-1 away defeat by Blackpool in the Football League Championship . On March 23, 2012 Chester celebrated his goal premiere at Hull City when he scored the interim 2-0 for Hull City in the Football League Championship away game. In the end, they won 3-0 against Cardiff City . At the end of the season he finished 8th in the table with his team.

In the 2012/13 season Chester did not play only two of the 46 league games and scored one goal in his 44 appearances. At the end of the season, Hull City is in second place in the table with 79 points and a goal difference of 61:52 and is the second direct Premier League climber next to the champions Cardiff City .

Chester made his Premier League debut on August 18, 2013, in which he and Hull City lost 2-0 away to Chelsea . Ironically, he was able to celebrate his first goal in the Premier League against his ex-club Manchester United. In the home game against Manchester United he was able to bring Hull City into the lead in the fourth minute, but in the 66th minute he secured the victory for his ex-club with his own goal to make it 2: 3. The season ended Chester and Hull City in 16th place in the table and thus secured relegation.

West Bromwich Albion

About a year later, Chester moved to first division club West Bromwich Albion in July 2015 for a transfer fee of eight million pounds . It remained a short interlude and only started nine times during the 2015/16 Premier League season.

Aston Villa

In August 2016, Chester signed a new four-year contract with the then Premier League relegated Aston Villa . The transfer fee was not made public, but was classified in professional circles as not lower than that paid by WBA at the time. He was a regular player for the next two and a half years and played more than 100 compulsory games before a knee injury knocked him out in the first half of 2019 when Aston Villa made it to the Premier League through the play-offs. At the end of January 2020, Chester moved to second division Stoke City on loan .

National team

On May 7, 2014, Chester announced that he would play for the Welsh national team instead of the England team . He had this option because his mother was born in the Welsh town of Rhyl and therefore has Welsh citizenship.

The Welsh national coach Chris Coleman then called him up for the friendly against the Netherlands on June 4, 2014 in the national team of Wales . He made his debut in the national shirt on the grid. In the first qualifying game for the European Championship on September 9th against Andorra (2-1), Chester was allowed to make his competitive debut and thus he can only play for the Welsh national team. Overall, he played in 6 of the 10 qualifying matches over the full season and helped to secure Wales' first ever European Championship participation.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Wales squad. He was part of the team and played all five games in the tournament over the full season. The team reached the semi-finals and was eliminated by Portugal.
