The Museum unterm Trifels is the local history museum of the city of Annweiler am Trifels .

At the foot of the Rehberg, just two kilometers as the crow flies, is the town of Annweiler, where the museum is located under the Trifels. It contains a variety of exhibits on the settlement history of the region, the history of the city of Annweiler and the Reichsburg Trifels , as well as natural history collections on aspects of natural and landscape history.

A special topic is the work of Emperor Friedrich II . B. is honored by a cast of the bridge figure of Capua - probably a portrait of the emperor - and a facsimile of the book of falcons . In addition, one receives an overview of the buildings of Frederick II in Italy, whereby a model of the Castel del Monte designed according to the latest findings catches the eye.

The history of Trifels Castle and its reconstruction in the 20th century are documented in several exhibition rooms. Archaeological investigations during the period of their reconstruction (1935–1938) and in the 1960s and 1970s led to a large number of excavation finds, of which more than 2000 objects are on display in the museum. In addition, various attempts at reconstruction (excavation or castle models) are used to show how the Trifels might have looked during the reign of the Salians and Staufers . Further attempts at interpretation, some of which have been romantically transfigured, can be traced in the Trifels Gallery using a large number of graphics. In this context, the working methods of a medieval construction hut are shown through models, drawings, dolls in contemporary clothing, work equipment and lifting tools. The Trifels served as a state prison during the 12th and 13th centuries. The English King Richard the Lionheart was the most prominent prisoner. This fact is illustrated by an abandoned scene. A cave installation with a speaking figure from Emperor Barbarossa (Friedrich I) tries to establish a connection with the Kyffhauser legend.

Developments in trade and industry are documented, among other things, by the representation of a fully equipped tanner's workshop and by exhibits on enamel production . The history of Annweiler is presented in around 500 exhibits. This also includes a coin collection from the Middle Ages. The model of an old church clock and colored slides describe Annweiler's church history.

Another part of the museum shows the development of flora and fauna in the Annweiler area from the Ice Age to the present day; The focus is on the development and use of the forest by humans. In a special adventure area, the fairytale forest, it is shown that this living space can also take on frightening features in certain situations.
