Samuel Michael "Sam" Vokes (* 21st October 1989 in Lymington ) is in England -born and for the Welsh national team active football players . The 1.86 meter tall center forward is currently under contract with Stoke City .

Athletic career

Sam Vokes, who was born in the southern English port of Lymington, joined the youth department of the local Association Football Club in nearby Bournemouth and joined the professional team for the first time shortly after his 17th birthday on December 5, 2006 in a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest for use. The first goal followed just eleven days later in a 1-1 away draw at Gillingham FC and in January 2007 the third division team decided to tie the strong center forward with a professional contract for 3½ years. Although the scouts of numerous major clubs from Newcastle United to Aston Villa and Celtic Glasgow were also interested, the young talent stayed in the lower class Football League One for the time being and contributed twelve league goals in the 2007/08 season. He was the top scorer together with Jo Kuffour , but could not prevent the relegation of the "Cherries" to fourth division.

On May 23, 2008 Vokes signed a four-year contract with second division Wolverhampton Wanderers and met right on his debut after substitution for 2-2 final at Plymouth Argyle on the first day of the 2008/09 season . In the period that followed, he also consolidated his early status as a “surefire joker off the bench” and scored two goals in the second league game to win 3-1 away at Charlton Athletic . After numerous part-time appearances - Vokes started only four times in 36 games - he formed an assault line from the start with Andy Keogh against FC Southampton on April 10 after the injuries of Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake on - and hit after just 36 seconds. He scored a total of six goals in the season and thus helped that the "Wolves" rose as second division champions in the Premier League . After four first division games , however, he was loaned to third division Leeds United in October 2009 . At Leeds he came to nine missions between October and December, in which he scored a goal, which he contributed little to the third division championship. After his return to the "Wolves" he came in March 2010 to a two-minute short stint against champions Manchester United .

In August 2010 he was awarded to the second division club Bristol City , but where he came only to a 13-minute short assignment. Other loan stations in the 2010/11 season were the second division clubs Sheffield United and Norwich City , where he came to a total of ten league appearances, in which he managed one goal for both. Towards the end of the season there were two short assignments for the "Wolves". After 54 minutes of play in three games at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, he was loaned to the second division club Burnley FC in early October 2011 , where he scored two goals in nine games. In late January 2012 he was then awarded to second division promoted Brighton & Hove Albion . There he got three goals in 14 games, which he contributed to the fact that the newcomer finished in 10th place.

In July 2012, he moved to Burnley FC for 635,000 euros , where he had already played on loan the previous season. In his first full season with Burnley, he scored only four times in 46 league games, but Burnley improved two places in the final table. It went better in the following season : in 39 games he scored 20 goals and was one of the four fifth-best goal scorers, which he helped Burnley to runner-up and promotion to the Premier League. This also led to the club extending its contract until 2017. More missions were not possible for him due to a torn cruciate ligament in the game against Leicester City at the end of March 2014 . In the 2014/15 Premier League season he was only used again on Boxing Day 2014 and only made 15 top division games, in which he failed to score. As the penultimate Burnley rose immediately back to the second division. Here he scored 15 goals in 43 second division games, more than a fifth of Burnley's goals. As the top scorer of the "Clarets", he played a major role in the second division championship and the renewed promotion to the Premier League.

National team

Vokes on his national team debut against Iceland (2008)

Due to his grandfather, who was born in Wales, Sam Vokes is eligible to play for the Welsh national team despite his English birthplace . On February 6, 2007 he made his debut for the Welsh U-21 selection against Northern Ireland and contributed a hit to the 4-0 victory. During the qualification for the U-21 European Championship he developed into a regular player and was also appointed to the senior national team. In the 1-0 friendly win against Iceland he celebrated his debut there on May 28, 2008 when he was substituted on in the 49th minute. In the next 19 games of the Welsh he came to 15 appearances, but never over 90 minutes. On September 6, 2008 he scored his first goal eleven minutes after being substituted on in his third international match in a 1-0 win over Azerbaijan in the first game of World Cup qualifying . In total he came to seven missions in the unsuccessful qualification. After his 16th game, he had to wait a year for his next assignment and only sat on the bench once in six games. After he was substituted on and off in two games in May 2011, there was another break of five games. During this time, the qualification for the EM 2012 , which was again unsuccessful, and in which he was not used.

When he came on on November 12, 2011 in a 4-1 win in the friendly against Norway in the 70th minute when the score was 2-1, he scored the last two goals in the final minutes and thus scored his first "double". In the next 17 games, he came to 12 appearances, including five in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , in which the Welsh were only fifth in their group. On September 10, 2013, he played for the first time over 90 minutes in a 3-0 draw against Serbia in his 28th international match. He played his second game over 90 minutes on March 5, 2014 in a friendly against Iceland and scored a goal for the first time when he was in the starting line-up. Before that, he could only score joker goals.

After the cruciate ligament rupture suffered at the end of March 2014, he missed the first four qualifying games for the Euro 2016 , in which the Welsh players lay the foundation for the subsequent successful qualification with two wins and two draws. In the last six qualifying games he was able to make his contribution, even if he was only substituted in five games and only played over 90 minutes in the last game, when the qualification was already certain.

He was then used in two of the three subsequent friendly matches and was included in the Wales squad, which is to represent the Welsh at the European Football Championship in France in 2016 - the first ever participation in a European Championship finals. After he had only sat on the bench in the first two preliminary round games, he came in the third game in a 3-0 win against Russia from the starting grid for his first appearance at a European football championship. He was also in the first team in the first knockout game against Northern Ireland. In the quarter-finals, he headed a few minutes after his substitution to make the 3-1 final against Belgium. He was substituted on in the semifinals when opponents Portugal had taken a 2-0 lead with a double strike. But this remained until the end of the game and Wales were eliminated.
