Daniel "Danny" Vukovic (born March 27, 1985 in Sydney ) is an Australian football player . The goalkeeper made headlines with a blow against referee Mark Shield in the 2008 championship final, and in 2011 he was the first goalkeeper to score a goal in the A-League with a penalty .

Club career

Vukovic began his active career in 2002 with Parramatta Power in the National Soccer League . After the league was closed, he played for a year with the Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the New South Wales Premier League .

With the establishment of the A-League he was signed by the Central Coast Mariners and was provided there as a substitute goalkeeper for John Crawley . When Crawley sustained a serious hip injury after the 5th match day, which ultimately meant the end of his career for Crawley, Vukovic moved into the regular formation and was able to establish himself there. He reached the finals of the premiere season with the Mariners, but lost there 0-1 to Sydney FC around Star Dwight Yorke .

Two years later he was again in the championship finals with the Mariners. With a 0-1 deficit against the Newcastle Jets, Vukovic went forward with a corner in stoppage time. When the corner was cleared by hand by a Jets player, but referee Mark Shield did not whistle a penalty, the situation escalated. In a pack formation , Vukovic Shield hit the arm, which he responded with a red card. The Australian Football Association assessed the Vukovics action as a physical attack on the referee and initially suspended the goalkeeper for 15 months, of which six months were suspended. After several appeals, the penalty was finally shortened and split into two parts, which meant that Vukovic only missed game days 3 to 7 of the following season.

In the summer of 2010 Vukovic moved to Europe and joined the Turkish first division club Konyaspor . The contract was surprisingly canceled by the club on August 13, 2010 to make room for a foreign outfield player.

Vukovic then returned to the A-League and received a contract with New Zealand participant Wellington Phoenix . For the 2011/12 season he moved to league rivals Perth Glory . In spring 2014 the Japanese club Vegalta Sendai loaned it for five months . However, Vukovic only played two games for the club in the J. League Cup. In the league he was only in five of thirteen games in the squad, but was not used in these games.

In the summer of 2015, he was prematurely released from his contract by Perth Glory after the club got into financial problems. The reason for this was the discovery that the club had paid its players more salary than a salary cap applicable in Australian football would have allowed.

Vukovic then signed a three-year contract with Melbourne Victory . After a year, this contract was prematurely terminated at the player's request, as Vukovic's son was being treated for a serious illness in Sydney and he therefore wanted to be close to his son. He was then able to sign a two-year contract with Sydney FC .

During his time in Sydney he carried a seagull flying around the stadium at the Australian Cup final against Melbourne, which had been hit by the ball and was therefore on the field, in the next stoppage of play from the field.

In the summer of 2017, Vukovic moved to the Belgian first division partner KRC Genk with a two-year contract with the option of an extension for a further two years, which has been exercised in the meantime.

On July 30, 2019, he injured his Achilles tendon during training. As a result, he only stood between the posts in the Supercup game and the first league game in the 2019/20 season. In February 2020 it was assumed that Vukovic could play again from April 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season was canceled prematurely.

National team

Vukovic first appeared for the Australian U-20 team in a 12-0 win over New Caledonia in 2005 and was nominated as the third goalkeeper behind Adam Federici and Justin Pasfield for the World Cup finals in the Netherlands. Between 2006 and 2007 he was the goalkeeper of the Australian Olympic team and qualified with the team for the 2008 Olympic Games in China.

Due to his assault in the 2008 championship final, Vukovic was banned from the tournament. An attempt by the Australian Association to suspend the suspension for the duration of the tournament has been stopped by FIFA.

At the beginning of 2009, the goalkeeper with Serbian roots was appointed to the Australian senior team for the first time as part of the qualification for the 2011 Asian Cup , but was not used. He finally made his debut in a 0-0 friendly against Colombia for Australia on March 27, 2018, when he came on for Brad Jones at halftime . He was also in the squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Australia was eliminated in the preliminary round after two defeats against France and Peru and a draw against Denmark . However, it was not used.

In 2018 he played two friendly matches for the Australian national team. At the subsequent Asian Cup in 2019 , he was in the squad, but was actually not used.
