Jan Jacobus "Sonny" Silooy (born August 31, 1963 in Rotterdam ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

Silooy began his men's career in 1980 at Ajax Amsterdam . With Ajax he was four times Dutch champion (1980, 1982, 1983 and 1985) and three-time winner of the KNVB Cup . In 1987 the team won the European Cup Winners' Cup . For the 1987/88 season he moved to Racing Paris for two years . He then returned to Ajax. He won the 1992 UEFA Cup with Ajax . In 1995 the team won the UEFA Champions League , the European Super Cup and the World Cup . With Ajax he was again four times Dutch champion (1990, 1994, 1995 and 1996), three times winner of the Johan Cruyff Schaal and in 1993 again winner of the KNVB Cup. In the 1996 Champions League final, Silooy became a tragic figure in the penalty shoot-out against Juventus Turin , because his penalty was blocked by Juve goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi , and because all the Juve players scored, this miss meant the final defeat of Ajax Amsterdam. For the 1996/97 season he signed with the German Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld . After relegation to the Bundesliga in 1998, he moved to De Graafschap Doetinchem , where he ended his career in 2000.

For the Dutch national football team , Silooy played 25 games between 1983 and 1993 without scoring a goal.

After his career as a player he worked a. a. from 2006 to 2008 as a youth coach at Ajax Amsterdam . In 2010 he coached the American football team Dayton Dutch Lions FC . He then moved to DC United , where he was Director of Youth Development .
