Fernand Auguste Paulin Goyvaerts (born October 24, 1938 in Mechelen , † April 5, 2004 in Bruges ) was a Belgian football player .
Goyvaerts was a striker and made his debut at Club Bruges in 1956 at the age of 16 . In 1958 he scored a historic penalty against RCS Verviétois for Club Bruges in the first division, in which he still plays today. In 1962 Goyvaerts moved to Spain for FC Barcelona and became a professional, which had not been possible in Belgium until then . When he moved abroad, he was still considered a “deserter” and lost his place in the Belgian national team , for which he had played eight times. The Belgian press kept silent about him afterwards. "Fernando" became very popular in Spain and was named the best foreign player in the Primera División in the 1963/1964 season . In 1965 Goyvaerts moved to Real Madrid , but due to a knee injury he could only rarely be used there. He is the only Belgian football player who played for both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
In 1967 Goyvaerts was appointed to the 1967 FIFA World Cup. With a goal in the 88th minute, he contributed alongside Mazzola and Eusébio to the 3-0 win against Spain.
He later followed coach Alfredo Di Stéfano to FC Elche . A move to France to OGC Nice followed . In 1971 Goyvaerts returned to Belgium and played there for another eight years with Cercle Bruges , SC Lokeren , WS Lauwe, RFC Tournai and again WS Lauwe.
After his playing career, he worked as a football manager and FIFA player agent and discovered Jean-Pierre Papin and Daniel Amokachi , among others . In 2004 he died of a cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 65 .
