Jérôme Mbo Mpenza (born December 4, 1976 in Kinshasa ) is a former Belgian football player on the position of a striker .
Career
society
The older brother of Emile Mpenza began his professional career with the then second division club KV Kortrijk . There he was under contract between 1993 and 1996 before moving to Excelsior Mouscron in the first division in the summer . For this he made his debut in the top Belgian division in the 1996/97 season. He developed well from the start, became a regular player and caught the attention of the top Belgian clubs. After only one year at Excelsior, he moved to the top club Standard Liège . With him he reached the final of the Belgian Cup in 1999 , but had to admit defeat Lierse SK with 1: 3 . After two and a half successful years, he left the Reds and moved to the first Portuguese football league for Sporting Lisbon in January 2000 . However, he could not assert himself here and so it happened that he switched to Galatasaray Istanbul in the first Turkish league for six months . In the winter of the 2001/02 season, he moved back to Belgium , back to his hometown club Mouscron, where he found his old form. From 2004 to 2008 he played for the Belgian record champions RSC Anderlecht . With them he won the Belgian championship in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and the Belgian Cup in 2008. After winning the cup, the striker moved to the Greek club AE Larisa in July 2008 . Even at the time of the move it was known that Mpenza was struggling with a stubborn injury. After half a year without a job, he decided to end his active professional career.
National team
Mpenza made 56 international appearances for Belgium , scoring three goals. He was a participant in the 1998 World Cup , the 2000 European Championship and the 2002 World Cup . At the '98 World Cup in France, he was substituted on in all three preliminary round matches of his team. Although the Belgians did not lose a game, they missed the next round with only three points. At the European Championship two years later, in his own country, Mpenza couldn't get past Luc Nilis , Branko Strupar and his brother Emile Mpenza and so only made a brief appearance against Italy . Again the selection kickers failed in the preliminary round. In 2002 at the World Cup he came back to more missions and was behind Wesley Sonck number 2 in the storm of Belgium.
