Joshua "Josh" Simpson (born May 15, 1983 in Burnaby ) is a former Canadian football player . The 1.80 m tall left-footed player was known for his fast play on the left side and his flanks at full speed.
In addition to Canadian citizenship, he has also had Swiss citizenship since 2014 .

Youth and development
Josh Simpson began playing soccer at the Lower Island Soccer Association, Canada, in Vancouver . Due to an athletic scholarship, Simpson played for the University of Portland soccer team from 2001 to 2003 . The Portland Pilots play in the NCAA Division I. He also studied finance. After college, Simpson played briefly for the Boulder Rapids Reserve in the USL Premier Development League . With the reserve team of the Major League Soccer franchise Colorado Rapids , he scored seven goals in 14 games.
Change to Europe
In the summer of 2004 Simpson moved to Millwall FC in the English Football League Championship . He made his debut for the Londoners in a game against Plymouth Argyle . He played 43 league games there in two years.
During the summer break of 2006 he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for 1. FC Kaiserslautern . There he quickly became a regular player, but was thrown back several times due to injuries. He played his most important game for the Palatinate on the last match day of the 2007/08 season, when he helped keep FCK from relegation by scoring the opening goal and assisting them in a 3-0 win at home against 1. FC Köln .
For the 2009/10 season Simpson moved to the Turkish club Manisaspor ; he signed a two-year contract until 2011. On September 10, 2009, he played for the first time for the team from the Aegean region . He was substituted on for Ariza Makukula in the second half against Trabzonspor and also scored his first goal in the Süper Lig in the game . On January 17, 2012, he terminated his contract with Manisaspor after the latter was still unable to pay Simpsons salary.
On January 19, 2012, he signed with the Swiss first division club BSC Young Boys . On February 12, 2012 he made his debut for the Young Boys in the game against FC Sion . On May 23, 2012, Simpson injured his left foot very seriously in the season finale against FC Basel . In a collision during a header duel with Basel player Markus Steinhöfer , he twisted on landing and his tibia and fibula broke in two. After a long recovery period and several setbacks, Simpson announced the end of his career on May 21, 2015. At the beginning of the 2014/2015 season, by mutual agreement, he was deleted from the Young Boys' squad. In March 2016 Simpson signed with FC Muri Gümligen in the 3rd Swiss league. After almost two years of abstinence, he celebrated his comeback in Switzerland at FC Muri-Gümligen . He made his comeback for Muri on April 22nd and made his goal debut for Muri-Gümlingen on June 6th.
National team
Simpson was discovered early by the Canadian Football Association and has been a Canadian international since the U-18.
With the U-20 national team of Canada , he took part in the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates . In the last sixteen he scored the winning goal against Burkina Faso . The team was eliminated in the quarterfinals. He was previously in the squad for the 2001 Junior World Cup , but was not used there.
On January 18, 2004 Simpson made his debut in the Canadian national football team in the friendly against Barbados , which the Canadians won 1-0. In 2009 he was appointed to the squad for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup . He was also part of the national team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 .
In total, he completed 44 international matches and scored 4 goals.
