Uri ( Urdu اُوڑی) is a small town ( Municipal Committee ) in the northwest of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It is located in Tehsil of the same name in the Baramulla district . In the 2011 census, the population was 9366. The gender distribution is 403 women per 1000 men. 50% of the population are Muslim , just under 40% Hindus and 9% Sikhs .
The city lies in the valley of the Jhelam . This cuts through the Pir Panjal ridge , which separates the Kashmir Valley from the lowlands. Uri is located on the southern bank of the river at the confluence of the Nalla Hajipir at an altitude of 1363 m . The National Highway 1A runs from the district capital Baramulla, 30 km to the east, along the river to Uri and ends 15 km further west at the Line of Control , the demarcation line to Pakistan .
